Who has built DIY monitors from a kit?

Fresh off my fEarful 12/6 build, I am now contemplating upgrading my PC speakers to decent monitors by way of a kit similar to this or this form Parts Express

Has anyone hand built monitors from a kit? Are there any to recommend?

Too many good commercial options in the lower budgets. You need to spend a few hundred per box to make it worthwhile.

Building things like speakers is fun and you can get real creative on the looks these days while retaining the same function.

I love the looks of highly figured wood but it's best as a veneer over high quality MDF in monitors. Most pre-built come in some flavor of black.
