Yes, Blackwell is the first that comes to mind when it comes to Prince. But then there's the team with the bass player who plays sitting on some kind of couch and with an upside-down warwick and the drummer who wears overalls. I believe they are the guys in the Get Wild Video (sorry, can't come up with their names right now). Those guys are ridiculously nasty.

I would say Mitch Mitchell & Noel Redding would be an example of a loose (not "bad") rhythm section.
Buddy Miles & Billy Cox would be considered tighter in comparison, IMO.

On a tangent, the "best' impression of Hendrix (& Shankar) I've heard is Stanley Jordan. No joke.

Yep, I have it. Quite nasty. This is getting a bit off track, but I think that's my favorite because Prince stuck to a lot of his nasty rhythm guitar stuff all throughout the show.

Yes his bands are always tight but the NPG band from the early 90's and the band on his Muisicology tour were by far the tightest. I've seen P live 5 times since 1984 (last time was the Welcome To America Tour December 2010, NYC).

BTW he isn't using the husband/wife team anymore. John Blackwell was on drums back in Dec, 2010.

yeah meshuggah! their drummer is seriously a machine and the bassist (called "dick" hellyeah) is great too although the buzz tone is horrible..

mudvayne is also extremely thight. at least at ld 50 and the end of all things to come. killer timing and great groove
the drummer is very talented and the bassist rules anyway^^

I know I am going to get flamed for this but, the inherant problem with this thread is that there is no age cut-off. For example, some of us have been listening to drummers going back to Gene Krupa, Sandy Nelson, Benny Benjamin, Al Jackson, Jr., Ginger Baker, Jim Gordon, Russ Kunkel, Ritchie Hayward, Stewart Copeland, Matt Apts, etc....

I cannot help but feel that a "greatest ever" thread has to have some historical perspective...

Personally, I'm ignoring the "greatest" part of things and seeing this thread as "here's some folks you really should listen to if you want to understand what 'tight' means".
