Ok, ok...let's not get all anal about how a rhythm section is defined, but curious to know other readers thoughts on which drummer and bassist lock in like you wouldn't believe.
I say you can't look much further than Tomas Haake and Dick Lovgren. Tighter than a gnats chuff.
Tight meaning a bunch of guys playing like a clock... or tight as a bunch of guys playing off eachother and keeping it together
...it's almost like they speak a different language.
(I'd even go so far to opine that Mike & Paul's concept of "tight" is based on a mutual consensus of where every down- and up-beat falls...whereas Bill & Tony's concept of "tight" is based on Bill's idiosyncratic yet metronomic idea of subdivision combined with Tony's consumate professionalism that allows him to integrate seamlessly with whatever situation he's presented with)
...but if we analyze what they're doing, there's surprisingly little similarity.
Anton Fig...there's a name I haven't heard in years!
How about Gene Simmons and Peter Criss?
Joke.
Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, surprised no one has laid that out there yet.
