Who hates this?

what a pointless and useless thread

talkbass is a place where people can discuss bass issues NOT gang up on people who, for instance may 'dislike' people who use picks.

i hate people who put up useless threads like this

it seems that people like to make these threads because they feel insecure about people making fun of them using a pick

i use a pick! but i dont start these useless threads! no matter how much some idiot ridicules me!

He was supporting your opinion man. The OP stated he is sick of people hatin' on the pick players.

Read before you type man.

DON'T MAKE ME WHOOP UP ON ALL Y'ALL, NOW.

Awww come on dude, I mean if you are going to play bass might as well play it right. Matt Freeman is what you want. Listen to Maxwell Murder.

Do people always have to give that example every time freeman is mentioned? That solo is the bass equivalent of a schlocky metal solo, it's hard to get the technique to do it well but his actual proper bass playing overshadows those 10-15 seconds of fretwanking. I've tried to learn it properly a few times and it's effin hard, but I always feel that song song isn't really needed on out come the wolves as cool as it is.

Anyway to answer the OP sod em! Although I do recommend having a bash at playing finger style, you never know when you might end in a band or playing an odd song where you'd be better off with a decent finger style technique or two.

I have no problem with use of the plectrum.

HOWEVER...

Interestingly enough I spend as much (maybe a tad more) time playing acoustic guitar as I do bass, including six- and twelve-string steel, and classical guitars.

I don't use a pick at any time on any of these instruments, at all. I just don't like it. I used to use one (well, not on the classical), even on the bass, as a sort of "phase" I was going through, but I got to the point where I felt it was a hindrance more than a help.

So now I use only the fingers (and the fingernails) on all plucked instruments. I can still strum, by using my clinched index+thumb, and have gotten rather good at it. I slap/pop on bass a little, though that's still something I'm acquiring. I even play with three fingers on bass from time to time. But mostly, on bass, it's back to the ol' two fingers.

Saves a great amount of time on my having to hunt down a pick every time I wanna play, at the very least.

it's not "cheating" to use a pick. It's just not what players like me do. Picking works for some kinds of music (hard rock/metal) but not all types.

And I'm pretty sure my fingers can play faster than most pick players can pick.... As if that's important!

Yeah I paly a fair bit of guitar, possibly more then bass at the moment too, and I play alot with my fingers. Can't get away with it all the time cos I play guitar in a pretty heavy hardcore punk band, so that's out of the question obviously.

But for the same reason I can't always use my fingers on bass, in my main band I have to play REALLY fast sometimes for some of the more up tempo stuff we do and there's no way I'm gonna be able to do that unless I simply practised playing as fast as possible with my fingers for a couple of years solid at least.

I hate playing with a pick. I don't like the tone. I think using fingers with fingernails sound better. But, that's for the kind of music I play. For punk bands, the pick works. I still don't like the tone, but it works.

IMO, fingernails create a better sound and attack than a pick.

And, before I get a list of people who play well with a pick and have good tone thrown at me, I understand that there are exceptions to my statement. But, in my experience, yada yada yada.

Where I formerly resided before moving here, I was often chastised for not playing with a pick. A lot of bass players in that particular area used a pick. I say either when it works. No difference to me.
