Who here plays in MODES ??

Just curious , I learned everything on guitar using a Jazz improvisation book as a kid , hence I really learned to play modes across the fret board , I still use some of it to stay in key ( Much less than gtr ) I try not to over play and stay in the box on bass and focus on groove and pocket.

We do the same thing. I understand modes, however, I leave them for the electric lead guys and concentrate on scale degrees R-5-8-5 and R-3-5-7 or just roots and R-5 seem to do what I need.

I will in practice venture off into modes just to have fun, but, on stage I'm basic follow the chords and pound out chord notes....

I think if you’re playing in a tonality, you’re playing in a mode (perhaps an altered mode) whether you think of that collection of notes as a mode or play all the ‘available’ notes in a mode, or not.

So I guess we need to know more context.

because I rarely explicitly think in modes
but almost certainly end up in modes much of the time in retrospect
I think in 'chord tones + other tones dictated by style'

If you are playing in a major or minor key, you are playing in a mode. Are you referring to playing specific music that makes use of modulating modes to accompany the chords rather than relying on one tonal center used across the piece? The wording of you question has me a bit confused.

I find modes to be very convenient melodic tools, so I use them for solos and melodies, which is a very small fraction of my playing.
I don't find them very usable when it comes to building a bass line.

If you play any 8 note scale you play in modes. Major an minor are just knick-names for two of the modes.

I also picked maybe not sure. I use them to help me out when I get past 1-3-5 of a chord to stay in key.

I often practice in modes. I find those are good for practicing other techniques. I don't play in modes unless it is a complete improvisation. I play songs. Are some clearly definable in modes? Sure. But playing in modes when you have a known song is like training wheels. I play specific notes for the specific moment in the song.
