'Chippie' is a general term for what used to be a 'Fish & Chip' shop ('fries' if your American), except now of course you can get Burgers, Noodles & Kebabs from most such non franchised / non branded 'takeaways' here in dear old England.

So Ampeg is the Burger 'King' of Branding and Elvis the 'King' liked his Burgers & Fries.

'Chippie' is also a slang word for a carpenter but that's getting off topic......

Of your list, I'd say Mesa Boogie, though Ampeg certainly is the best at nailing that "Ampeg" sound.;)

Actually, I am thinking that the real contest should be between the EA iAMP 800 and the Walter Woods Ultra High Power. Now, those are some amps, baby!

But then again, a good preamp with a PLX 3002 ain't exactly chipped beef, either!

Tom.

IMHO, the Holy Grail of bass tone. I'd like to find one just like this one! I've owned an SVT-CL & an SVT-2Pro-their volume and tone were'nt even close to the original SVT's(no offense intended towards people who own the newer Ampeg tube heads-just my opinion). I used to borrow an early 70's SVT stack from a friend for big gigs when I was starting out, and it had mammoth tone and volume.

Oh yes, one day one will be mine! :D

My vote goes to Ampeg.
