That's an old phase that goes back to the days of large horn bands.
Do any modern day bands still have "Sections"?
Does a three man group have a "section"?
Why is this term still used?

And just because you can pair up a bass player and a drummer together does not make them a "section"

Yep, it does. Listen to any hack play acoustic covers that don't sound right. The chords are there, the words are there, but the rhythm (ie. 'Rhythm section') isn't. You can't generate the appropriate rhythm without a bass and/or drummer. (Possibly with the exception of pop punk )

I would just assume that most bands would have learned to function as a whole.

The only reason I make a correction is to point out what is CORRECT and contribute to an actual discussion...I listed my favorite rhythm section (which I believe is actually a "rhythm section") earlier... People can, should, and do list whomever they want, including Pinky Lee and Deputy Dawg as their favorite rhythm section...Bass and drum is NOT a rhythm SECTION...It' a bass/drum combo...If you care not to add a cerebral context to this topic and make it a true discussion perhaps because you have nothng of value to add, then you should not participate, much the same as anyone else...I always thought that having discussions on these topics adds to the overall interest of what many people come to a website such as this for...In other words...if mine or any other post brings out the worst in you...Lighten up and IGNORE...Tell you what...I'll not participate in your endless list of names any more
