Who is your favorite rhythm section?

Fair question...A rhythm section is called a section because it contains the instrumentation that makes up a section, meaning rhythm instruments...Many singers or performers hire a rhythm section to back them up...meaning backup musicians made up of rhythm instruments...throw in a saxophone, and you'd have a rhythm section with a sax player added in (the horn player doesn't become part of a rhythm section because he plays along with one...a horn is not rhythm instrument as is a guitar, bass, drum, or keyboard)...Some rhythm sections also happen to be BANDS...and in that case...since they are generally marketing their ensembles...they are referred to as BANDS...but they can be primarily a rhythm section at the same time...The Funk Brothers (my personal favorite) were a rhythm SECTION and were at Motown records, and had a documentary about them...13 of the original or early members were a part of a rhythm ensemble since they all played rhythm instruments 3 guitars, 3 keyboardists, 3 different drummers, 2 bassists, and 2 percussionists...ALL rhythm instrument players and all part of a rhythm ensemble or section as they were referred to while recording at Motown (although you also had sub-sections, like the three guitarists,, Messina, White, and Willis who were a guitar section, but not a rhythm section within themselves...just a part of a rhythm section)...All the horn and string players at Motown...NOT Funk Brothers and NOT rhythm section players...And Lynyrd Skynyrd was a hell of a rhythm section, and add in the vocals, and a hell of a (southern) rock band...

The three piece band in and of itself can also be a rhythm section (see my previous post) assuming all three are playing rhythm instruments (keyboard, bass, drum, guitar, or percussion instrument)...Those are not mutually exclusively concepts, just as Michael Jackson, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra were singers AND entertainers (and you could call them performers too)...Therefore, as I've already stated...Cream and Rush, for a simple example, are rhythm sections...although since they also feature vocals (not a rhythm instrument) and for marketing purposes...are a BAND (but sans the vocals...are very good rhythm sections...Lifeson and Clapton are integral parts of those rhythm sections...not separate entities)...Capice???

Agree with most of the top picks here. Someone else to mention, one of my all-time favorite bands: Dave Brubeck Quartet, the classic lineup with Joe Morello on drums, Eugene Wright on bass, and Paul Desmond on sax, and of course Dave himself on piano.

Morello was a monster drummer and Wright locked in with him tight as a drum while not playing particularly fancy bass lines. And Brubeck's percussive style of piano made him very much a part of the rhythm section, sometime even when he was soloing! Listen to the drum solo during the tune Take Five; while Morello is doing his thing Brubeck's piano is keeping time in the background the whole way through with that 5/4 riff.

And watch Brubeck's piano solo in this performance.

(As an aside, since Eugene Wright is still alive, he should join TalkBass and post this video in the Chicks at Shows thread!)

You made my point.
Many of the bands are just that.
BANDS.

Some MAY originaly have been a rhythm section.
But many listed above aren't.
They are the bass player and the drummer from a band paired together and stated to be a "rhythm section"
