Perhaps, but Mo was one of the most prolific and in-demand session and touring English bass players for the best part of 50 years so he did more than a few things right - whether this device was one of them I guess we'll never know...

My high school bandmate built something very similar, albeit using an unwound guitar string -- even hand-wound his own single-pole pickup from scratch. He called it the "monochord" and would play melodies with a bottleneck slide on it.
