If people are dancing, you're bringing it home, baby---not something to be taken lightly . . . How many times have you watched a poker-faced alt rock crowd stand there, arms folded, and thought "nobody's moving?--do they hate the music?" Granted, not ALL music should be groove music, but as a bassist I'd say there are few greater rewards than laying down something that makes folks shake it uncontrollably.

"We are Family" sister sledge, has the best bass lines ever, listen to the groove in the verse, as well as the slap bit in the chorus , LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEE playing that song!!

Also have a listen to some of the playing on the village people's songs, heaps of double tapping and groove there also. Almost makes me feel embaressed to say I like this Stuff!

Now, where's my Spandex pants gone???!!

I agree. Playing serious originals and duos was satisfying but grooving with a band and moving the crowd is a blast. Not all those dancers were vertical, btw. We liked ballads also...the throb tunes...the unplanned pregnancy medley. :D :bassist: :D

so sad is this I actually have the score book for "Saturday Night Fever" and the original double album (with extra 12" of Donna Summer) Thank God it's Friday.

Stomp , We are Family, Good Times, Aint no stopping us now, are all top tunes with smoking bass lines.

Now, granted, I'm a big fan of dance music, and all manner of DJ-driven stuff, and it's been part of my livelihood as a bass player----so I'm highly opinionated about it--but I must say, that one of the main reasons DJ culture really took off in the clubs--first with disco, then later especially with house, etc.(heck, hip hop too in a way), is because "bands" went too far up their own arses and stopped delivering the groove goods to move a dancefloor and work the room to keep people grooving.
"Hey, we really got the crowd moving now, and lookie--here's comes that half-time bridge that leads into the guitar solo and then the time-change before the OTHER bridge builds back up to the big chorus and . . .hey, where'd they go?!";)

Great thread! I love doing stuff like "That's The Way I Like It" with the band. I have to admit though, some of the ones that have constant octaves like "In The Navy" (okay, we only do it as a novelty once in a blue moon) seriously cramp up my fretting hand.

While I wouldn't consider it "disco" the bass line on "Return of the Space Cowboy" by Jamiroquai is the best bass line I have ever heard. Rhythm wise, note selection, etc. You could analyze the entire bass line like poetry.

My wife loves disco and I really like a lot of the bass lines. And I remember the first time I heard Boogie Oogie Oogie, I was like... "that is one slick bass line". So my wife and I thought it would be fun to perform it at our wedding. http://youtube.com/watch?v=pCRPieRM61U

My playing isn't so great cuz I was drinking a bit and really nervous for some reason (hey... it was my wedding). My wife's singing was spot on as always.

We did an all disco show a couple of years ago and I had a blast learning these songs:
Get Down tonight,
YMCA
Ladies' Night
Do Ya Think I'm Sexy
Disco inferno
Last Dance

The only problem is getting your rock oriented drummer to keep it simple and steady. And getting the guitar players,as they all think is their birthright to lead, to lay back.

Yep, I'm guilty of being a disco bass junkie :). My teacher even taught me a few in our lessons recently, as they are a great way to expand on developing consistent technique and disciplined timing, without getting too hung up on complicated lines.

Now all I need to perfect is playing these lines without biting my bottom lip and nodding like a rabid dog :bassist:!
