Who makes a passive P with a J neck?

"Building one" seems like a good plan until you figure the costs involved. If you don't have a wood shop or the ability to spray finish, even a budget-minded bass costs more than a factory-built Precision.

Price list of all "budget" parts:

Mighty Mite Precision body (finished): $150
Mighty Mite Jazz neck (finished): $100
Fender "Original" '62 Precision pickup: $70
Pickguard: $20
Bridge: $20
Tuners: $45
Knobs, pots, jack: $20
Strings: $20
Nut, string tree, screws: $15

Grand total: $460 and you still have to assemble it. Add shipping (or sales tax) for everything and you can almost buy a used American Fender P Bass.

It will also have near-zero resale value, and it might be a real dud... you never know if it's a "good one" until it's built ;)

And once more...Peavey Fury. Got one a few months ago - P sound with great jazz type neck...slim and fast. Most posts on this bass just say leave the bass as is thou I did read a post from one TB member that he installed a Bill Lawrence P46 pup and loved the improvement. Just got one used from a member and looking forward to trying it. Even at that I'll have less than $250 in it. It's also the cheapest bass I own !!!

Hmm.. I love the tone of my P and have been wondering about swapping a Geddy neck onto it myself. Trouble is, my P is Mexican and the Geddy neck is the older Japanese version so I'm not sure it'll fit so well.

The Geddy neck is by far the nicest J neck I've come across currently made by Fender. If the swap will fit well, I'd recommend doing this. You can buy the Geddy necks on eBay pretty often.

Yup, and the split-coil only SB-1 and recently reissued LB-100, which has a traditional alnico split-coil and thus will sound more like a Fender. The LB-100 comes standard with the #12 neck, so for a J neck you'd need to order the #6 (1.5" nut, 7.5" radius) or #8 (1.5" nut, 12" radius, and my favorite neck). The non-standard neck is a $50 upcharge. I'm battling serious GAS for an LB-100 with the #8 neck. If my past is any guide, I'll lose...and I think I'm at peace with that. :D

Thanks didn't know about LB 100. That looks very interesting with a #8 neck
