Who owns a 15" and why do you use em?

I use a Mesa Boogie 400+ with an Epifani 1x15 in the studio for recording just about every style.

I used a 1x15 for over ten years and the main reason I went with the 15 is that the speaker size is basically the starting point for bass. I come from the school where you go for a workable tone depending on the gig or style of music. The 15 was the easiest to get the workable tone. I now play through a 6x10 and love that wall of sound but there are days and situations where I miss my old 1x15.
I got my 1x15 as a package w/a D-180. I love it- I think of it as a sort of high-powered fliptoppish thing. I could use another cab for outdoors, but if there are walls to bounce off it's fine. A very nice punch, low in the chest. OOF.
I started out w/ a 15" & 12" in one cab-2 sep. compartments-probly ahead of it's time for 1974!!!?!??? THAT was stolen along w/ the rest of my bass gear in 1987 IIRC.
But after that I just got a EVTL115-seemed to be the Standard 4 bass at the time.-A 1x15"! Used it on it's own for near 10 yrs! NEVER had a problem keeping up in ANY band i played with!!!!! MyNV215 isn't that much bigger/heavier either-sounds heaps better -BUT I STILL like the sound of two 1x15" cabs used together!

Surprised Munji hasn't been by to give his unique perspective on 15's.

I have 5 different cabs with 15's.
It's just the way the cabs are built.

just started using my new Berg cab, stand alone last nite with a blues band, worked fine. I use it with a GB Neox 212T in larger rooms but Im now looking for a 8 ohm, 210 to put above the 215. Wonder how the new neo AE cab might work with the NV? Or a Epi PS210 maybe? Don't know either of these cabs and have not found either to try out, so just puttin out feelers.

32 lbs., eh? Color me interested. Too bad for me you're in the UK, but a 32 lb. 115 that looks 70's B-15-influenced sounds right up my alley.
I'm bloody interested! Perhaps not about a 15, but someone who builds cabs in the UK that doesn't just fiddle about with a PA box to make it sound kinda alright for bass.
Any chance you fancy taking on a 2x10 + midrange driver challenge? Or perhaps a 2x8, I'm not too sure what I want, but I need something to balance out my NV215s thick thump and presence with a tiny bit more mid focused punch and attack.
Post or PM me if your interested, I'm a bit skint at the moment, but come September I'll have some cash to spend on a project.

The right 15+6 formula tramples a 210 in every way. And adding a midrange driver to a 210 isn't going to be nearly as efficacious either - the two 10" drivers are mechanically limited by their excursion/xmax for one thing.

Not sure I can cope with any more than these two models - they've taken SO long to design. The nice thing about both cabs is that they have relatively flat response through their passband (sealed 8x10"-like on The Compact whilst The Big One goes both lower and higher) so tweak your EQ and the cab responds. The midrange speaker in The Big One is very powerful and with only one 15" to compete with I'd expect the cab to sound much less 'vintage' than the NV215 (which looks a fab cab, sadly never had the chance to try one).

That Big One cab looks pretty doggone interesting as well. Sounds like you actually use concepts of good audio design rather than throwing speakers in a box. Again, though, too bad you live in the UK for me.
Nevermind, I REALLY don't need to be adding any more bass to my setup, and to be honest I could do with the 10s/8s for a bit of decent off-axis response when I'm near it, as much as adding a little more attack and mids. The NV isn't all that vintage sounding, it's more one of those kinda modern vintage kinda designs, where you get a nice colourful sound, but made with all the tech knowledge Mr. Bergantino has to offer to improve it. As opposed to a flat lifeless all out hi-fi design. The thing really kicks in the mids for what it is, and has a really nice low punch to it, and some good high mid/low treble definition, could just do with a little more punch and a little more defined mid mids to cut through. Just not quite working out for heavy rock yet, but I didn't wanna go with the 10s cos I'm more of a 15 guy. I'm sure the mid cab will sort it out, if I ever find one I like that is...
I'll probably end up goin with 8s, cos your probably right about the 10s and mid thing. Unless their very low tuned 10s (which I wouldn't want them to be) they would cross over to the mid for alot of what I wanna put through it, so 10s would probably be pretty pointless.
Can appreciate it's very hard work to build properly though, especially by yourself, both look like sweet cabs.

You've got a lot going on there...lightweight, loud, and one great looking cab to boot. If the way it sounds is commensurate with the way it looks, you've got a winner there, mate.
