Meh--I'd bet 99% of bassists worldwide don't even have a tuner in line, just bass and amp. You're probably thinking it's not that way just because the tech-heads and gear-heads on TB (like me) make such a production of all the gear. People don't use so many gadgets in "the real world".![]()
Eastwood precision bass copy+fender 8x10 cab+ashdown head=cut through killer sound

Last night I ran my bass>JDI>PA. Hows that for straight in?
I own a few effects, but I haven't gigged out with them in years. Pedals aren't bad, they're just not my thing. GAS still lures me into checking out new ones from time to time, but I always end up feeling like they take away more than they add.
The only time I would use an effect, would be if a bandleader asked me for it. Fortunately, effects aren't an intrinsic part of the types of music that I normally play, so the subject never comes up.
Here's my signal chain:
Rock: custom HH Ibanez ATK, into Genz Benz Streamliner 900, into two Flite 103W's.
Loud pop or worship: the ATK, or my coffee table bass with dual P soapbars (depends on the music), into a modified Bose L1 Model 1.
Folk, jazz, everything else: the coffee table bass, into the SL900, into one or two Flite 103W's.
Both basses are active, and strung with nickel rounds. I play 90% fingerstyle, and 10% pick.
If not for chronic back trouble, I'd have bigger/more cabs. Sadly, my back is forcing me in the opposite direction these days. The Flite cabs and Bose system are soon to be replaced by a single cab solution: an AudioKinesis Thunderchild 112, acoustic format. If it doesn't keep up with my loudest gigs, I'll either add a second TC112AF, or stop taking those bookings.
I think that Bongo nails it pretty well. I DO however carry a Seiko tuner in each of my guitar cases but none of them is ever left in line. I do have a pedal board with a few effects but seldom use it.
What do I use?
Full tube pre-amp into a Carvin DCM1000L feeding a pair of Acme Series I B2 cabinets. This system gets used every week.
Carvin BX1500 into a pair Acme Series II B2 cabinets. This is used for gigs apart from my regular thursday night gig.
ART Tube Channel into a Mackie FR1400 again into the Acmes. This is my spare system.
