Who really plays anything over 10 strings!?

The Dean Rhapsody has triple course strings and it's 12 strings...I guess that's what makes it unlike any other bass out there? ESP has an 8 string double course as well so does Hagstrom.

There are other 12ers, Hamer is the original, but Gretsch and many others make them as well. And of course, plenty of luthiers are willing to build one for you. Here's mine.

I can understand purchasing an 8 string or more, but even though the double course basses sound really cool I can't imagine using them very much.

If I had to listen to someone play more than a couple songs on it I would be pretty annoyed. Doubling every single note an octave up gets old really fast.

"Invented" is a little bit exaggerated... 12 strings guitars and 8 strings basses have always existed, so the idea is an old one. Adding one more is like the razors blades... "Now with 30% more blades!!"

Well, it's kind of almost like a contrabass 12 string mandolin.

Myths mostly.... My Hamer B12L weighs less than my Ric 4001, tunes up easily and stays there, and the last set of strings I put on it cost me under $30 USD....

I'm going to check out some of those videos after work. I don't think I've seen anyone play an 8-string or 12-string without a pick...I mean the octave 8 & 12-string basses.

Let's not forget the 8 string fretless which has a beautiful singing tone when played with fingers rather than a pick. Mark Egan is noted for his 8 string fretless sound as heard on Marianne Faithfull's "A Secret Life"

Here's my Hamer B8S and Waterstone TP12. The Hamer is short scale 30" whilst the 2nd gen Waterstone is 32". Great for duo or trio work, alt-anything or where ever your imagination takes you.

Ugh. I feel hurt just by looking at the angle on his wrist on his fretting hand. Wouldn't playing such wide necks for extended periods of time cause carpal tunnel syndrome?

Although I have to confess that the bass sounds pretty good.
