Who started it all for you?

Cliff Burton was the first guy I really remember I admired. But I really love a whole range of bassists. I think the main person I look up to when it comes to bass though, are the friends I had, who really took me in as a bassist and taught me some of the first things as a bassist.

The bassist in our band started it all for me. Because he left town to live in London, which meant I had to play the bass instead of guitar. :D

But seriously, I'd also say Flea, so +1 to RHCPs cover of Higher Ground, and then the whole Blood Sugar Sex Magik album.

Also, Mark King's playing on the Level 42 Live album was very inspiring.

Given my particular radio circumstance growing up, the first time I HEARD bass was 1980, 'Another One Bites the Dust' and 'New World Man' and 'Subdivisions' by Rush. This sparked an interest, but no bass yet.

I had not even heard the Beatles or Zeppellin yet LOL.

By 1990 I had moved out on my own from my parents, and I had loved Rush for years by then. So dived in and bought my first bass; a new Ric 4003S in FireGlo and an Acoustic combo amp. :hyper: So there I was, learning the fretboard and trying to stumble through Rush and "Heart of the Sunrise" by Yes :D

Then in 92, got married and gave it up till December 1999, when I was watching Yes's "Live from the House of Blues" performance on DirecTv. Squire just KILLED on that show and was smiling and having a blast the whole time, and making it look EASY! I've been back on board ever since.

Thank you to those who make me want to play:

Ged, Chris, J Jamerson, J Deacon, J Taylor, L Claypool, J McVie, T Weymouth, A Clayton, P McCartney, D McKagan, J Pastorius, Flea, and my good friend S Burrows

Got to yet again chat with the man who started it all for me. Mr. George Porter Jr.

He even signed the set list for me (and made a correction since he added a song).

I was an upright bass player (and still am). I always looked down on the electric bass for reasons that were totally unreasonable and stupid. I didn't see it as a true instrument because it was "electric". But then I watched "Modern Electric Bass", Jaco's instructional videos on YouTube. I saw that there are electric bassists that take the electric bass seriously and actually treat it like a real instrument, which it is. And he's the reason I took up electric bass.

Jeff Ament. I was 14 when I started playing in '92 (do the math) when "Ten" was huge, especially the video for "Jeremy." As a kid who was asked to learn the bass so he could play in the junior high jazz band, hearing Pearl Jam's bassist was plenty of inspiration to want to play like that.

After that, it'd be Newstead (think the "My Friend of Misery" intro), Robert DeLeo, and to a lesser extent, Flea.
