Double Bass Who wants a VL208?

I didn't like the NM208. Yet another of a whole mess of small cabinets that left me cold. Not enough low end before it ran out of room and nowhere near the mojo of the VL208. A good cab not to make. The NL210 is a very nice box. I didn't like it on my DB so much but on the EB it was great.

There are a whole mess of EB cabs I like though, its way easier to please me on EB than DB.

I like the Wizzy 12 M. If I didn't have any access to VL208s I'd probably use that on my DB. But really I'd buy more VL208s on the used market when I could rather than anything else yet available new.

The R&D took them almost 3 years. So you gota figure that if John Dong couldn't get it to sound the same, no one can. That's a lot of time invested in a single prototype.

Well, EA has extended the offer, maybe they will pull together enough orders to build them agian. I'm good with the single one I own. There have been a couple for sale recently.

Seems to me without the NL210 in the EA lineup the NM208 might have significantly more interest then it did at the time.

That is a good point. I think that they dropped the NL-210 due to driver availability issues. I am not sure if they'd have better luck with neo 8's for the NM-208, or if it would be easier to ramp up for the NL-210 again.

You have a few things incorrect. First off, I worked for EA for the past 5 or 6 years and the absolute last thing on their mind is greed. Secondly, the parts are not "available commercially". The drivers are built to spec. Minimum order for drivers is 100. That means 50 cabs to build. There is a minimum on cabs as well based on wood usage and waste. Minimums are usually 37 to 40. Finally, you state "I still don't understand why EA doesn't just build this cab on a limited run basis, given the interest in it." How many, here, have actually committed to ordering one, half a dozen or so.

Considering it took 18 months to sell the last 3 of the original VL208, making 50 now, especially in this economy, is ridiculous. Building 25 and warehousing the rest of the cabs, drivers, etc just serves to raise the price. I would love for EA to reintroduce a VL208, but only if the market and the economy warrant it.

IMHO you are right on the money. Frankly, making a re issue of this cabinet with all the newer lighter cabs out there dosen't make much sense. It weighs 48 lbs, and takes a considerable amount of watts to drive. From what's bounced around these threads the Wizzy 12 will get you pretty close. I also understand that EA is working on a Wizzy 2x10. There's also the new Thunderchild by Duke Lejune.

I haul my two VL208 cabs w/iAMP 800 to louder gigs, and while I love their sound I would prefer to have a neo-based cab that is easier to move around. That said, whatever alternative I choose will have to sound quite good for ebass as well as URB.

FYI, looks like the Wizzy-based 2x10 has been put aside to concentrate on a 2x10 more reminiscent of the NL-210, specifically something that is capable of more low end than the Wizzy 2x10 prototype.

I thought about two 208's for EB but that's almost 100 lbs of cabinet, even if they are small. Getting a single cabinet that sounds good for both instruments is pretty tricky.
