Who's Overrated? Who's Underrated?

I don't think I agree that Will Lee being overrated. Listen to some early Brecker Brothers.

I agree with you.

Becker though( I know him a lot better than peter cetera hence my comments only on my opinion on him)... his tone, his absolutely tasteful ,simple , functional but interesting playing(to my ear anyways...), his writing, his "I shouldn't really sing but I'm doing it anyways"-style of singing and his delivery of the songs , I think is just fantastic.
That goes for 11 tracks of whack just as much as it does for circus money and steely dan stuff.

Very,very cool me thinks!!

Overrated-
Les Claypool
Matt Freeman
I can't think of many others. It's tough to call bassists overrated when they're fundamentally underrated in the context of most bands.

Steely Dan is great. A lot of session bass players kick it for them too. Here's a bit of Becker in action.

Loved the tone on "Beginnings"...not to mention the bass line at the breakdown halfway through.

Underrated:

-Berry Oakley
-any bassist who's ever played in Blues Traveler



Overrated:

- Geezer Butler's bass solo in N.I.B. - Am I the only one who feels like it was just some stoner noodling?
- Cliff Burton

I think the NIB solo has become a bit of an overrated classic -- as is the case when something stands the test of time. But I remember when it came out and the general consensus was that it was nothing special. I kinda like it though. : )

Younger guys may be shocked to hear that The Lemon Song was also considered "just some busy riffing over a blues" at the time. Now it's regarded as a masterpiece -- mostly, I believe, because it represents an era. And most guys today don't have that kind of groove.

Overrated :
Flea : He was at least interesting to listen to until "By the way". I don't know what he thinks but his playing became very dull. Befor that he was a part of the melody now you can remove the bass and you don't loose anything. Plus is way of slapping is limiting.
Geddy Lee : I just don't get what is so wounderful about his playing. Yeah he plays sometime fast lick and all but I don't know it doesn't suprise me.
Marcus Miller : I prefer when he was playing fretless with other jazz monster. Now he only play R&B oriented stuff that all feels the same.

Underrated :
John Myung : He can play ridiculously fast and hard stuff with Dream Theater. his tone isn't so great on record but it works live.
John Patitucci : Beyond his insane bebop solo and groove with Chick Corea, he is a wounderful song writer. His talent for his rich music is rare among bass player.
Jeff Smith : A bass player who won the bass player contest some years ago. He is very talented on the fretted and fretless bass in solo.

fieldy is the bassist for the metal (if you could call it that) band Korn.

He is known for ultra low drop tuning, stupid low action that causes nothing but continuous fret buzz and being a slapper.
Most kids defend him because they think he is brilliant, they clearly havent listened to many bassists!

the john entwistle post earlier i think, alot of people sort of miss the point ...he changed how people look and value the bass players role in a band...

...for me bass is about feel and expression not how fast i am or how cool i look..music is not a competition,the older i get the more i love to listen to all styles..some i like some i love,but bass for me is a passion...i suck at it but i just keep trying...
