Double Bass Why 5 Strings are essential

While an interesting point, you're comparing apples and oranges when it comes to 5 string DB's and 5 string slabs. While some 5 string DB players use a low B, many also go for the high C as well.

There is a fundamental problem with the peg box and its been expertly repaired twice, but even when you take it out to a gig very carefully it causes it to slowly to lose its head. To note I didn't cause the problem he came to me with it. So why put a new neck? Well "Otto" is a 150 year old German butler that sings a beautiful bass note, so with a new neck the value will go back up and it sounds fantastic...
In all seriousness I have been a working pro (jazz) for 12 years (post college). I have only seen one 5 string DB up close. I'm sure they are great and I've heard some good stuff on recordings but, at least in jazz, they are hardly essential.
I don't care really and I don't see the point of this thread apart from trolling .....
But I think it's a laugh that somebody who joined today is calling somebody with over 9 years on the board and over 30k posts - a young apprentice....bizarre!

Woh easy tiger! I'm only kidding. I thought in cyberspace we were age less. And it was just a Star Wars quote. But I'm not a MB virgin.... I have posted on many sites and many different subject. I just joined this site since I've been bass owning, (I say bass owning, 'cause I wouldn't be arrogant enough to say I was a player), since I was 16, and it amused me that I wasn't a poster on any bass site!
