Why are bass cabinets so expensive?

Used gear is the cheapest way to go , private sales tend to be better than stores. Kijiji might have the best deals , but you have to be patient. Over the years I’ve found some great buys online, and the sellers I’ve dealt with were honest about condition. However I have heard horror stories.
The best deals will probably be older and heavier , you might find a single 12 in speaker that would work. Traynor often delivers a good bang for the buck and is plentiful in Canada. Mini eight or ten inch cabs are a more modern development. The ones that sound good tend to be pricey.

If you don’t have a speaker, how else would your (or any) instrument be heard? It’s the last mile in the chain. We all NEED some kind of speaker to hear what we’re doing. Supply and demand. There is a demand for speakers, hence the price(s). Also - everything is more expensive these days. Wait a few weeks/months (if you can) and check again. I think used prices are stabilizing. New prices aren’t.

I was about to say. 800 bucks for a professional powerful cab that, theoretically, may last you forever is surely not much. Made in Italy too.

By the way (and apologies for veering off topic), how do you like it? Or perhaps start a thread about it. ;)

I couldn’t believe cabs were so much a few years ago when I started playing out more. But, they are integral and a great cab can make a so so amp sound decent (maybe you could say the same the other way around but not as much I think). New, the cab I have costs over twice as much as my amp - Mesa D800 and Subway 2x15.

The major components in speakers, the wood, the magnet(s), etc are commodities that aren't going to drop in price year over year like electronics tend to do. I haven't looked at TV prices in years but walked through the TV section at Target and they had 62" 4K UHD OLED for like $600. How is that even possible? Sure, they use the rare earth metals too, but in much smaller quantities. Electronics get cheaper, smaller, faster over time and wood usually goes up.

Good plywood is about double what it was 5 years ago.

We use both cottage and cabin interchangeably.

It has power, I even added a washer and dryer because I don't believe in roughing it. Currently it's 3 season but I'll be winterizing it this summer.
