They are priced that way to keep n00bs from playing them and thus devaluing the intrument as a n00b intrument. There, I said it, we all know its true!

why are Foderas so expensive?

I got nothing against EMG, BUT i would never pay that much for a bass that use "factory run" pickups, though i realy dont care about what the pickups are aslong as they sound good, but i dont want a expensive bass that runs EMG pickups, i want to be able to brag alittle..
Though i will never get a fodera, as my intrest in design and what sounds good lies in a completely different place. (if anything, wooten have turned me of Foderas..)

You can get any pickups you want in a Fodera. EMGs are only stock in the Wooten signature models, otherwise the stock are either Aero's or Seymour Duncan custom pickups.
Rich Noobs have to be the one making up the bulk of their sales seeing their prices..

I think an NYC Sadowsky would be closer to $4000US if it was optioned moderately (maple top etc).
Looking at their stuff that dont have the name "wooten" on them, it looks more reasonably priced.
Fair enough but if you compare a 9k Fodera vs even a 3k Sad is there 6k difference in build quality or components? and why?
I honestly can't see a single flaw in a Sadowsky bass, maybe it's me but even being a complete heckler I can think of anything to knock them about.

No, think of it like "what would you pay for x?"
Imagine x was something you were mildly interested in trying.
Imagine x was something you were very interested in.
Imagine x was something that you had always wanted.
Imagine x was the one thing you had dreamed your whole life of owning.
Imagine x is the one tool you need to put your creative vision into reality and thus earn your income.
I would suspect that in each of the cases above, you would put a different value on what you would be prepared to pay for x. For some people, a Fodera is the tool that allows them to make their creative vision a reality. What price can you put on that? Well Fodera puts the price that people are willing to pay. Sadowsky does to, as does Fender and SX. If your customers are made rpedominatly of people who fall into the latter categories I have described above, you can more or less charge what you want. If they fall into the former categories, chances are you are not going to sell to many $9000 basses.
I would be willing to pay more for a bass i can get in rather short time than a bass i will have to wait 3 years for, i dont see the logic in waiting 3 years for one bass, alot change over 3 years.
How is Fodera's customer service? I know their quality is unparalleled.
I've found a builder that does increadible work and is extremely easy to talk to. I've spoken to him on the phone for several hours discussing woods and pickups. He even talked for an hour just about preamps--to help find the best one for me. And best of all--he is always happy to chat. This, to me, is worth the extra expense. That builder is Brian Ristola.
I don't know how easy Fodera is to reach, but that level of customer service is worth alot to me.

Personally I love jazz basses so I lean more towards a Sadowsky then a Fodera, I also live fairly close to the Groove Shop here in NY which carries both instruments. I can say without a doubt the way in which fodera's (neck thru) basses are built is very complex, well thought out and forward thinking, like them or not they are on the cutting edge of Electric Bass Luthiers....

i look at custom handmade instruments of the boutique sort, ie fodera, mtd, ritter, etc...to be artwork in addition to being means by which one can create artwork. if a well known painter is recognized as skilled and known to create beautiful work that is labor intensive and time consuming, in addition to tbeing a quality finished product, who is to say how much he should be able to charge for it? a lot of it also ahs ot do with it being relative to location....it costs more for the fodera shop in new york city to stay open than it does for a shop in new hampshire for insance, where chris stambaugh works.
