Why aren't Jaguar basses more popular?

Maybe it is mine... its on clearance, guitar center san marcos, ca.... 589 or 569 something like that... Red. Plays pretty well.

i really need to go back and experiment with a jag. they have a cool retro-futuristic look which catches eyes to begin with. but then the sheer massive tonal adjustability they give you puts their use through the roof for tone junkies. volume, tone, active/passive mode, bass/treble controls in active mode, and... what do the other switches do? switches the pickups between series and parallel, if im not mistaken. someone please verify or correct this statement... but anyway, i totally thought about getting one when i was bass shopping for my first decent bass. got an ibanez sr400qm, love it... played a jag at a local store though. awesome bass. if someone were to take the electronic system from one and through it in a bass that had 24 frets, id be all over it instantly

Classic icons like James Jamerson(P Bass),
Jaco,Marcus Miller (Jazz Bass)
made a handfull of bass styles into "the standard"..
and from that point on, they're known as "The best" to dealers,young players..
(I remember as a young guitar player,tons of older guys telling me,"The Les Paul is THE BEST")
..why else would we still see a ton of Hofner "violin basses" on Ebay every day?

After they become elevated to a "classic" level,they become collectable,and sell for $50,000
(even though they sold for $179 when they first came out)

A Jaguar,Pedulla,Dingwall,Ritter,Sadowsky,Citron, or even a Peavey,Carvin or Washburn may be a fantastically created instrument,with great tone and far more features than a PBass...
But as far as popularity,
they'll all always play,"second fiddle" to the classics.

i have a jaguar bass (the red one) since about 2 years - sometimes i like it (neck) and sometimes i hate it especially when it comes to the electronics and pups - they are crap in my opinion

so everytime when i play this thing i´m thinking about - should i upgrade or should i sell it - weird, very weird

now i´m looking for an second 4-string like the lakland darryl jones (unfortunatly the skylines that i tried were very heavyweight and the us models are very, very heavy on price in austria) or similar - i think the hotwire funky 77 or the clover avenger could be a good match - we will see :)

I just wanted to come back and say that I just got my Jag back from getting PLEK'd. All I can say is amazing. I am now getting all my basses PLEK'd. They set the action to about 1 1/2mm at the 12th fret with no buzzing. Not only is it easier and faster to play, but it really brings out a consistency in the overall tone.

Everyone is going to have their own unique experience with the JAG, but I have to say the switches aren't confusing or cheap. It is not rocket science to successfully operate the JAG. I added the BA II bridge and it was a great improvement in balance and sound. I did the shielding mod which corrected the hum issue (it was a cheap and quick fix). Now that I got it PLEK'd, it's a completely amazing bass.

I highly recommend PLEK!
