I love Steve Swallow's playing with John Scofield Trio. His playing is so smooth, yet sort of "gritty." I really can really feel his playing. It just seems really down to earth to me. The Live at the Blue Note videos on youtube are excellent. Scofield and Swallow blend so well together because they both have their own unique sound that is different than anyone else's. And of course, Bill Stewart's work on the drums is always excellent. That guy can play well with anyone.

It's my guess that he plays bass guitar because it makes the sound he wants to make; I'll bet he uses a pick for the same reason. He probably sits when he plays because he finds it more comfortable.

Several years ago I picked up a (gasp!... casette) copy of an album of duets featuring Steve and Carla Bley called

"Duets"

I highly recommend it as a study in his tone. Songs were nice too

I liked it much better than his "swallow" album
