He's a visionary.
I havn't read past the first page yet but as an electric bass player who plays jazz I'm so greatfull for Steve Swallow. He's able to use an electric bass with the openness, the feel and the sensitivty of an acoustic player. Electric bass player are agressive players, this is the main reason why you won't hear them playing in a jazz context that isn't fusion or more modern. I've been haning with some great older cats who have hipped me to this. Although I'll always have my roots in electric playing I'm now spending a lot of time listening to Steve Swallow and Charlie Haden (I could write a short dissertation on how I feel about Charlie. What a beautiful cat. He hears things in such a profound way.). Listening to Paul Motion's playing from the last five years is an eye opening experience as well. Anyhow, we can learn a lot from the great Steve Swallow. He's melded two worlds that don't generally like to speak to each other and he's done it with absolute grace. What a beautiful man.
