It picked me.
I was a dumb college student and I had this bad ass Winchester .270 deer rifle - but I never went hunting. So I took it to a pawn shop so I could trade it in for a guitar. See... my bedroom window in my college apartment opened up straight across a 20 foot walkway to the bedroom window of one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen.
Anyway, I figured I could break the ice with her if she could see and hear the fact that I was now a musician! I had an amp, but no guitar. So, to remedy that... out with the rifle, in with a six stringer. Well, all the guitars at the shop were too expensive for the trade (in retrospect, pretty clear I got ripped off), but there was this cool looking 3/4 scale Gibson SG knock-off bass that looked just like the one Jack Bruce from Cream played. So I bought it instead.
Started playing along to records and the radio and before long just developed a love for it. I realized quickly that THIS and not the ballyhooed guitar was what made women shake their money makers on the dance floor. THIS is what gave a song balls. So, it grew on me even though it wasn't my original intention.
The girl across the way unfortunately wasn't impressed. She hooked up with some dorky frat guy with an expensive car, so I just turned the amp up and enjoyed my NEW love!
