2X15...X2.I had a couple powered 2X15 cabs. I had reliability issues with the amp and ended up gutting the power section. Worked fine after that. Worked great until it didn’t.
That's a lotta speaker holmes.
Musta been loud.

...or maybe they did and I can't tell.
I'm a few years late to the powered cab party.
I got some GK gear and was psyched to use their powered cabs - but they're now discontinued and not easy to find.
Anyone have any ideas on why the whole powered cab thing didn't get popular?
Seems like a great idea to me. Preamp to cab and that's it.
Am I missing something?
GR has a line of powered carbon fiber cabinets for guitarists. My guess as to why they don't have bass offerings is b/c of the combos, but having been through the 70 lb. WJ 2x10 powered cabinet experience, if something like GR AT Bass powered cabs popped up, I'd order one. Maybe two!
why would they?
The value of an amplifier is the tone it produces and not the volume supplement.
Ultimately I think few bassists are willing to consider the preamp/power amp path. Most would rather have an integrated pre/power solution. Most of the great bass preamps are rack-based. Racks tend to be big and heavy.
This seems like an ideal rig, any limitations or criticisms?Love my Phil Jones PB-300 and Noble tube preamp!
Edit: The most interesting discovery was adding a tiny TC Electronic Spark boost pedal just before the Noble. It allows saturation of the bass signal before entering the tube preamp. With that tiny powered cab, the rig sounds like a giant tube amp albeit doesn't push that much air. It's easy to underestimate the versatility of a small powered cab!

For real, no thanks!I once considered the Wayne Jones powered bass cabinets. They are high end but man are they heavy: a 2x10 powered cabinet weighs 72 pounds
If those are the ones I’m thinking of, I had a set of them back in the day (2 cabs with 8-10”), there was a power amp build in the cabinet and a preamp that sat on top, way more amp than I ever needed, but man they were loud, and all my musician pals were impressed, because, well, bigger was better....or maybe they did and I can't tell.

It was. There was a 4x12 on top of each on the best days. Good times. And someone to help with loading.2X15...X2.

While powered cabs may mean less weight total, it's still a heavier one time lift which for many is likely a deal breaker. I'd rather do 2 trips to lift cab and amp separately.
There seems to be one or two of those WJ powered 210s being bought and sold through a string of people here. I thought about one several times but the weighterformance ratio seemed off. And I believe you can only connect to the cab with an XLR, which is a definite negative. Was there anything good to report with that cab?
They really are great sounding cabs. If I had a permanent house/church gig and all I had to was show up with my Mesa Subway DI, (which has the dual XLR's,) I'd be super happy with that.

@two fingers where you at?
I know you went the Mesa + Mesa cab route, but I'm curious to hear your take on this topic.
