Why Didn't Powered Cabs Catch On?

I used to have Bergantino IP112 extended with an HT112, which was my favorite setup at the time. As much I loved the tone and power coming out of that combo, it was quite heavy despite the nice form factor. If Berg had the neo version, I would definitely give it another try, but as is I gave up on that stack...

I still have mine. Use it periodically. I would have put a neo 12 in it last year if not for the supply shortages. IMHO its a excellent cab (Albeit Heavy mainly due to the old school speaker magnet) and the beauty of it is that you can pair it with any of the cool preamp/DI boxes tubed or not!! I used to use mine with the Summit Audio with Berg mod, & Demeter201s but the Nordstrand Starlifter and NUX Melvin Lee Davis pre's have been my favorites. I loved just having 1 really powerful, loud speaker to load in/out. I have a Khan, haven't tested it with IP but I'll bet it or a Noble would be excellent. Also, if need be, you can stack it with another 8 ohm 12.

Yeah the Mesa TT800 and Subway 115s came along and seriously scratched my itch. I use the head as a "fancy DI box" for in-ears gigs. And the Subway cabs sound freakin amazing and are zero effort to transport. So I'm all set these days.

That said, I hope the conversation continues. To the extent that we still use cabs in the future I think powered cabs and preamp will be a bigger part of the market.
Before long the people who've stood in front of an 810 is gonna start to dwindle.

To choose gear because of it's configuration is one approach. To choose because of sound is another. The bassist who needs to carry on the subway has specific priorities. Meanwhile someone else needs SPLs, image and portability isn't an issue.

Saying "Powered Cabs" is like saying "cars." How many parameters are necessary for you in your car choice? Powered cabs are very distinct from each other. Different purposes and designs. Different capabilities. Different sound. Different performance.

It's wonderful that we have choices.

I thought I narrowed the parameters of the thread considerably when I typed "I got some GK gear and was psyched to use their powered cabs."

I have a powered cab and a head/cab combo at my disposal.

In theory, a powered cabinet sounds like a nice idea for those of us that have all their tone shaping done on the pedal board and just want something to make it loud.

I did learn that I prefer a head and cab in these situations, though.
That gives me the option to use the EQ to marry the cab to the room without messing with my pedal board sound (which might go to FOH at the same time).

So just add a few tone controls to the cabinet --- ooops, that's a combo now.

This has also occurred to me, though I find myself leaning toward the Ashdown Ant mentioned earlier.

I definitely agree with this... Yet, around the time I sold the IP and the cab, I was about to move from Brooklyn to Istanbul, Turkey (back in August 2019) and I did not have much time to do my homework to decide on which neo driver was likely to work with these boxes. At least, I am sure they are in good hands and being used more than I would ever use them out of my house or studio! :)
