Why do death metal bands use complex words

When you are self conscious about being stupid you tend to try and overcompensate buy trying to sound smart. And for the record, the music itself is the same way. "So technical" but really it's just trying to hard to show people how amazing you are. The best players keep it simple because they don't feel the need to show off longer.

Yeah, you're quite clearly much smarterer than those losers.

My band hasn't been named yet, going to text my lead guitarist and tell him that's what I want to name the band ;)

(via text message)
Me: Hey man, got our name situation figured out
Guitarist: Oh really? What have you got?
Me: We are now "Death Fist Kill Guy"! It's all one-syllable words so you know it's awesome.
Guitarist: ...what?
Me: No worries man! I already got it registered, started a Pure Volume/Soundcloud/Band Camp account, ordered T-shirts, and emailed some venues. Consequently, we have a show in two weeks at the Warehouse.
Guitarist: I thought you said you quit drinking years ago??? It's not even f***ing 5pm yet!
Me: I'm sensing some dissension...do you need a hug?

Good thing we've been best friends for 11 years...he was just relieved that we didn't have a show in two weeks under that band name! lol

Everyone knows that smart music is played on four chords in 4/4 timing with unsyncopated rhythms and lyrics written in first person dealing with the subject of falling in and/or losing love.

Duh.

Death Metal is certainly one of the more acquired tastes of subgenres.
It took me quite a while to get into it when I first heard it, too.

When people describe it as "just noise", I don't blame them. It sounded just like that to me as a young teen. Now it is my favourite style of music. Who would have thought?
Definitely agree. That and black metal. Got into black about 5 years ago, and the occasional DM band. About a year ago I seriously got into DM. Good stuff, when you're prepared!

While you may have a point- one I even agree with- liking and backing this post would be like taking healthy cooking advice from Paula Deen.

Now I love me some metal, but I agree on many points. Often, "technical" is interpreted to mean "fast". They aren't mutually inclusive! There are plenty of bands, however, who are both technical and fast.

And for the record, I got kicked out of, and banned from, an Oberweis grocery store as a teen over a Cradle of Filth t-shirt. Ah, good times.

Doesn't get much more death metal than "Ejected from the dispensary of sustenance and rehydration for aesthetic offenses"!

Or if you want to go the blues route, "Done Got Toss'd Offa Da' Foooood Train Blues"

Death Metal is avenging the debasement of articulation by means of prepostorous ignoramouses, whose only intended purpose is to destroy the savage offerings of those with the perspicacious perception offered by the insight of thoughtful erudiation.

I take offense to that, sir!

Also, yes, clearly everyone who plays heavy music is compensating for their insecurities. And so is everyone who plays soft music. Or any music. Or wears clothes. Or breathes.

^ Actually, pretty much.

Take classic RUSH, speed it up and make every part at least twice as intricate and a given riff last 1/8 as long, then replace the chick singer with the Cookie Monster and you're tr00ly br00tal.

I would like to hear that type of music without that F-in Vocal style...

My God...

Add a someone that is not trying to sound like a pathetic demon (IMHO and just mine) like a Rob Halford or Dio like aspect and it I think this would have a wider audience.
Again...IMHO

If you are looking for something like that, I think Iced Earth is the best modern band for that sort of thing. Unfortunately, their numerous lineup changes have likely prevented them from truly taking off as hugely popular band. But despite all of that, Jon Schaffer (founder/writer/rythm guitarist) has kept things remarkably solid.

Here's what is in my opinion, the absolute best song from their newest album. The second album with their third, newer singer, Stu Block. The song is classic Iced Earth structure. I saw them singe this live, last week. Stu's a good guy and a strong live singer:

Cthulhu

Here's a similarly structured song with their previous singer, Matt Barlow. One of the best metal singers of all time. Unfortunately, he's gotten old and can't hit it live like he used to:
Slave to The Dark (from an entire album about Todd McFarlane's Comic book character "Spawn")

check out "Alive In Athens" to hear Barlow live, in his prime.

they have tons of good music. I personally started with the "Horror Show" album, where each song is about a classic horror movie monster. The crowning jewel being this duet:

Phantom Opera Ghost:
