Why do folks cut strings?

On a lot of my basses, using 2 to 3 wraps on the post actually helps with intonation so I just apply that to all of them
3 wraps is all that’s needed, but then to the length of each tuner. With all my headless, the excess MUST be cut off.
Selling used strings?

LOL, Some uncut strings would require about 15 wraps on the post of certain basses. It would actually be impossible in some instances.
Here are a couple of pics you posted in another thread. Are you telling us you didn't have to cut these strings down to size?
Just for a perspective from the double bass side, where strings cost $200 - $600 a set.
The resale market is robust!
Old dead Thomastik Spirocores are coveted especially.
Single strings (EADG) are also regularly bought and sold.
As to used BG strings, that does seem a bit weird.

Agreed with the exception of 3 wraps on a Fender A string to prevent string rattle.
I don't like "cat whiskers" protruding from the headstock.
I measure ~3.5" / 4 fingers past the machine head post, crimp, then cut. Re-sale is not a concern. In all fairness, there's no reason you can't use the EB Cobalt Flat "no cut" method when installing:

I was just going to respond to this by saying I might consider it if they came off one of my heroes’ basses… then realized most of my heroes are no longer here
Woah. I cut at 2.5-3" past the peg and down the middle, but wrap straight out of it, I've never even seen someone wrap it back into the middle of the peg like that diagram shows unless it was a guitar. Lol funny how we all have little differences how we change a friggin string.
I don't, because I put them into the center of the post, I kinda thought mostly we all did? Lol I use some dumb big gauges too.
I tend to go just past the NEXT tuner in line or just past the headstock end (about 2"-3"), I CANT STAND my tuners being a mess of windings, that's for both bass and guitar (obv less string on the guitar).
strings are made A LOT better than they were in the early days of our instrument and cutting the string doesn't lead to strings unwinding, so why bother having them making a mess?

The same reason some people wipe from the front while other wipe from the rear.

Keep in mind those are Cobalt Flats and EB recommends NOT cutting the excess...has something to do with the "mating" integrity of the core wire and outer wraps and minimizes the chance of separation. While it uses up some extra afterlength, I still ended up with 5-6 wraps on my B post and its a columnar 3/8" Hipshot.

I've always cut strings to fit the bass. It makes for a nicer wrap around the post; two or three turns works well for me. Talking about roundwounds, here.
The hole in the center of my Hipshot string post isn’t that deep. If I didn’t cut the strings I’d probably have 15 wraps on the post.
My 35” scale 5 string has two wraps on the E and between 2-4 on all the others. I don’t think I could live with the emotional trauma of having more than 4 wraps per post.
Now my double basses on the other hand… they each have about 1500 wraps on each post. Because they’re Thomastik Spiros and I know someone out there would buy them for almost what I paid for them.
I measure The lifespan of Electric bass strings based on the number of gigs… I measure the lifespan of Double Bass strings across the span of Presidential Term limits… 4 years at a time.
