Why do I continue to read and listen to TalkBass

Good Advice. Makes sense. Interesting the many reactions to the thread. Some are funny. Amazing the ones who feel insulted. I feel they think, that I think either negatively about them for being on TB or I'm " focused on what annoys you (me) and that's what you're (I'm) honing in on:". Even when I say I respect peoples opinions.
For the record, respecting people's opinions and being annoyed are not mutually exclusive. Just because you said you respect the opinions of others, doesn't mean that you are not still focusing on what annoys you. I'm not saying that you're doing that; I'm only saying that your statement (highlighted) does not really prove that you aren't focusing on what annoys you.

...just sayin'...

Because it's an addiction! There! I've done it, I've taken the first step towards recovery....I have admitted that I have a problem.:help:

I feel the same way. Even if I don't post a lot, I am addicted to reading this stuff. There is a lot of great information from a huge community of bassists, mixed in with a lot of pointless debate about opinions and stuff where there is no right or wrong. There is a lot of stuff that makes sense and other things that make you say WHAT?? There is a lot of great feedback on gear, but also a lot of arrogant "my rigs better than your rig" stuff. There is stuff that is funny and other stuff that is just plain boring. The bottom line is that no matter what, TB is addicting and I can't stop reading it. Is there a group like AA for bassaholics? :bassist:

^^THIS!

And...it's just an internet website. Rather than ask why you continue to read TalkBass, I'd ask why do you take it so seriously? It's just an online forum. It's supposed to be fun and it CAN be informative if you consider the advice, opinions, and experiences of others. Only a fool would take action based solely on someone else's opinions or advice.

Relax! I find TB to be the most fun and civil forum online, but I have noticed that sometimes some people start taking it WAY TOO SERIOUSLY. TB is full of the opinions of people who you will probably NEVER meet. People who just feel compelled to either share something in order to help, or share something to vent off in some way. When you read someone's writing, you can't hear the tone of their voice or see facial expressions so we miss alot of the communication they are sharing because we don't have the verbal cues. Sometimes posts (including mine) come across as harsh or judgmental when they were never intended that way. It's just very hard to have a conversation with a stranger through the written word only. That's why it's important not to take it too seriously or let your emotions start taking over. Don't get so wrapped around the axel about it. It's just the internet--this isn't your real life, know what I mean?

Good. Nice to hear rational explainations. To ad a little to your post some people really don't do it to help but to show some sence of power. They feel inferior in some ways so they post and make strong statements and yes you can't see or meet them and they love that. Thats why I love it when guys like Jeff Berlin come on. People who are proven.

There are days i get annoyed as with you. I try not to focus on it. I can get annoyed by a driver as with anyone. But focused...naw.

Bass elitists are among the most pretentious of people sir.

Key is to only come to this site on and off. If you come here regularly and take it in large doses, you will not be able to handle it.

Words to live by.

Understand, this being the internet, where everyone is ten-foot tall, bullet-proof, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent, there is a lot of ego exercising going on here on a regular basis. You have some truly arrogant narcissistic types who use these forums as their "creative outlet."

You read too much and take it too seriously, it's not healthy.

Of course, sites like TB are a wealth of great advice from many experienced and skilled people who generously share that advice and experience with us. And, in turn, you should pay it back, or pay it forward, and keep the site a healthy productive source of valuable information.
