Why do I continue to read and listen to TalkBass

Why do I go through threads after threads? Listen to people trying convince me that there views are better than mine? Listening to players tell me which amp goes to which cabinet? Which bass has a better tone for rock, jazz or funk? Who has the best technique? Who has the best pedals? Even down to the pedal board they use. Which company makes the best strings for jazz, funk,? Which is better Flats, Semi flats, round wounds, steels nickle, light gauge, heavy gauge, long scale, short scale,...? Which is better woods, maple, cedar, alder, rosewood, no wood (metal,etc)? Which amp is better, tubes, digital, hybrids, etc? Why am I starting to find Talkbass uninteresting as of late? I have my amps which I love - Thunderfunk, Alembic w/Crest CA6. I have the basses which I love, - Alleva-Coppolo and Sadowsky. My favorite Cabinets by Aguilar, Bergantiono and Accugroove. My favorite pedals - many of them and players I listen to -Many of them. Also I like listening to the music.... I like listening to. I mean I respect everybodys opinion. I even made mistakes with buying an amp that was recommended to me on talk Bass for the sound I was seeking. I could not wait to sell that amp. So why do I visit and as of late (not always have and was a big fan in some ways) find it unpleasant. I don't want to feel this way.

Because when YOU want to talk, and want someone to listen, who will have the slightest idea or frame of reference about such bass-oriented minutiate you and everyone else here finds important... Talk Bass might be the ONLY place on the whole dad-burn internet to find someone who seems even remotely interested in reading, listening and perhaps responding.

Other than that? BASS PORN. Who cares what any gibberish anyone is talking about. It's all about the money shot. I'm talkin' (lookey here at this) BASS (for which I paid all this) MONEY. BASS MONEY.

Okay, you've got the gear you like, most are on a constant quest.

Time to look at other threads maybe, such as technique? Talk bass, brother, not just talk gear!

you mean you have learned everything in the 'technique' / general instruction sections? I find that when I start to lose interest in one section it is time to explore another. ps - you could also check out carol kaye's site for a while. Then pop back over here when you are ready for a break and vice versa.

It looks like drama to me, I mean, where are we going with this thread? No offence inteded, but you listened to people's opinions and advices, bought something you didn't like, sold it and probably lost a few pennies in the long run. So what? It is life, we don't always get it right.
You could add a "just nedded to vent" at the end, so it will be clear that you are just looking for some emotional satisfaction by sharing your dissatisfaction, nothing wrong with that. Or you are telling your story to people because you think that the board may benefit from it...maybe. But you just didn't make it clear either.

I guess I'm just expressing what I feel after years of listening and really coming back to what you feel is your own opinion is the most important. I just gave an example of buying something and selling it not to insult anyone. Just that I was trying to express that there are times when maybe we listen to a point that we forget what we hold to be true. But to insult anyone's opinion? Again I said I respected the opinions. If I made a mistake and bought something I did not like your right, that is life. Not moaning over it. I said that before. Just wondering if many are forgetting what there own personal favorites are and not others. I don't know. The thread is just food for thought. Not an insult or something that makes me better than you or anybody.

There's a lot of useless rambling about gear here - that's true. But there are some great folks that can teach you a lot about music. Those are the threads worth looking for.

Even if you have all of the gear you want, know what music you like, know who you are as a musician; there is still more to TB. I find that what I need to know about gear, or rather I should say, the gear I GAS for, is dwindling down. I've found the 5-strings I like and why I like them, the amps/cabs - the whys, effects are getting close - etc...

But now I find that I enjoy helping out (or attempting to) other players who are looking for opinions or knowledge or reassurance, etc. By no means am I saying that I am the best (I know full well that I am probably just treading water most of the time), but I am older [NOT OLD ], but it's nice to be able to help others out.

Maybe you're visiting the wrong threads.

I see your point now. Yeah, when it comes to music your ears are the ones you should listen to before you listen to anybody else.

I genuinely hope that's not a serious statement. I find that so often, folks post a thead starting off with something like "TB was getting too quiet today" and post a troll-ish (not saying you are) thread and think they are clever. But really, they should know... they AREN'T.

Word. I'm a guy who came back to playing bass after a long layoff to raise kids, and all I can say is that TalkBass has been a fantastic resource to get back up to speed on all kinds of bass and music related issues.

I can kinda sympathize. I go through stages of varying degrees of enthusiasm for a forum. Sometimes you do hit a point where it seems like it's just the same ol' thing, and you only really visit out of habit. Not sure what the cure for that is. (NOT Jeff Berlin, please ...

Whenever there are large groups of humans engaged in discussion there is liable to be some dysfunctional behavior. Much of network television these days reflects that well enough.

Since stumbling onto this forum almost four years ago I have found guidance in getting started on the bass, received help in picking out my first bass, learned about and eventually bought a Birdsong Cortobass and purchased a very good combo amp and an awesome Fender Jazz through the classifieds here.

Every time I check in on this site I learn something useful, get a good laugh or get to gawk at another beautiful bass someone has just picked up. I ignore the cranks and get most of the nasty barbs. Bass players are some innarestin mofo's, that's for sure.
