Why do Professional Baseball Players have batting practice?

They're professionals. They know how to hit! Why have batting practice? Why do professional basketball teams have walk throughs and go over play and have shooting practice? Don't they already know how to shoot?

Should pro and semi-pro or dad bands have band practice?
I had a guitarist that couldn't find time to practise as the duo that we were. I sent him practice tracks. He thought that he was too good to need them. Somehow, though, it was my fault for confusing him, when he kept messing up one of the endings.

That's nonetheless sharpening actualized by action/doing. The metal strip isn't the blade, it's a part secondary to the blade. Right?

Yes! And I was going to add, but didn't, that playing out is also a way to sharpen skills. Similar to the paper cutter. Neither I nor the paper cutter are sharpened by doing nothing.

One of the most technically proficient guitarists I know, who could also emote like crazy told me 30 minutes a day was the bare minimum just to stay even. If you wanted to improve put in at least an hour, but any less than a half hour a day and you were losing ground.

Being honest in my life, a budding musician to a full time pro and now only playing maybe 10 gigs and 5 or 10 recording sessions a year in my retirement, I’m not a holy roller, but I live in mortal fear of being “that guy” that doesn’t have his crap together and letting his band mates down.

That said, after 50 some years, I don’t need to “refine” 12 hours a day, but I do practice about 2 hours a week on the average and ramp it up to about 20 hours over two to three weeks prepping for a performance.

But to you point about company softball, if I went 0 for 3, you’d bet I’d be in a batting cage until I got it worked out before the next game. LOL!!!

Enjoyed your post.

Great way to put it into a reality context! Thanks. :)

My violin teacher used to say “if I miss a day I know and if I miss 2 days the audience knows”. She was a jerk and probably stole that line from someone but I don’t know who.
Yep - stolen. Anton Rubenstein said if he missed one day of practice, he noticed it. if he missed two, the critics would notice it, and if he missed three, the audience would notice.

My band practices to learn new material and agree on how should all play it. We have all learned the same YouTube version of something but we practice to understand how we all hear it and work out any bugs before stage time. We are not learning the songs during rehearsal, that’s a waste of that time.

It’s because they’re professionals. Hitting a baseball is one on the hardest things to do. Especially against pro pitching. I go to a lot of Dodger games. And I always enjoy it when I can arrive early enough to catch BP.

Professional athletes practice to stay sharp, just like any other athlete ~ plus you have to love being so good at something. It is the same with musicians. Every professional tour or playing situation always included practice except for occasions I was sight reading a show, but few have that level of skill.
Artists often paint or draw several versions to develop an idea even Leonardo DaVinci, Monet and Picasso.
Dad bands and other casual situations most often don't practice because it is hard to get 3+ adults together except gig.

I think it’s sad that you have to ask others for the answer to that question and second of all , the term Dad band is stupid…

IMHO, too many musicians confuse "practice" with "rehearsal". Practice is what you do on your own time. The individual band members are responsible for learning their parts. Rehearsal is when the band members come together and rehearse the songs they are going to perform. I will not go to a "practice" where the members want to drink beer and basically screw around for 3 or 4 hours. Rehearsal is necessary if the group is going to perform the material with some degree of confidence and competence. As always, just my 2 cents....

I understand and agree with the spirit of the question.

Major league baseball players also "rehearse". They pitch simulated games. Fielding practice. Scrimmage. They spend a month playing games that don't count. Work for a Major League Baseball player begins they day most of us begin our work day.

In fact, major league baseball players develop means of communicating changes and transitions during games much like well-rehearsed bands do during shows. Ones that, if discreetly done, no one notices.

Regardless if one is art and one is sport, "rehearsal" shows in on-field or on-stage performance.
