Amateur musicians, particularly those who don't live in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, etc., always seem to find it puzzling that pro musicians mostly play with other pro musicians and thus have no need of full-band rehearsals.

define ‘dad band’. Like, the members of U2 have kids, so wouldn’t they be a ‘dad band’?
My band practices to learn new material and agree on how should all play it. We have all learned the same YouTube version of something but we practice to understand how we all hear it and work out any bugs before stage time. We are not learning the songs during rehearsal, that’s a waste of that time.
Watching dad bands is often an exercise in self-abuse, in my experience. I would be very grateful if, in general, they practiced more. Just because you’re “old and tired” doesn’t mean you shouldnt set a bar for yourselves. If not for yourself, then do it for the ppl who have to suffer thru your terrible version of Hotel California. They're professionals. They know how to hit! Why have batting practice? Why do professional basketball teams have walk throughs and go over play and have shooting practice? Don't they already know how to shoot?
Should pro and semi-pro or dad bands have band practice?
So far in this thread this has been attributed to Chet Atkins, Itzhak Perlman, Anton Rubenstein, and someone's violin teacher.Yep - stolen. Anton Rubenstein said if he missed one day of practice, he noticed it. if he missed two, the critics would notice it, and if he missed three, the audience would notice.
Does this mean bands need a coach? That's actually not a bad idea. They're professionals. They know how to hit! Why have batting practice? Why do professional basketball teams have walk throughs and go over play and have shooting practice? Don't they already know how to shoot?

Yes, which is why my big band, which has existed 30 years, hires a professional director.Does this mean bands need a coach? That's actually not a bad idea.![]()
Yes. But…. in all the scenarios you mentioned, there is active opposition whose entire objective is to thwart you making those plays. Hopefully, your music scenario does not include “players on the field” who are deliberately and actively undermining the band’s collective efforts. They're professionals. They know how to hit! Should pro and semi-pro or dad bands have band practice?
Pro baseball players practice hitting so they strike out less frequently. Hitting a baseball at pro-level is timing, and 0.01 seconds difference in the time a player begins their swing makes a difference between a hit, a foul ball, or a miss. That margin of error requires frequent practice or they can be cut from the team and loose a few million a year in pay…
The same thing applies to musicians, but there’s usually a lot less $$ on the line….

For every player in the major leagues, there are a bunch of players in the minors who are part time players, and even more guys that didn’t make the minor leagues. It’s not that different from music.
