Some nice thoughts here which also shed light on why certain occupations will never pay very well for most participants - there are simply too many folks willing to do it for free or for starvation wages...because it is its own reward.
NOTE: "Because you like making music as a hobby" has been added. This is for those who don’t preform/gig.

I'll start - Originally for me is was the music, then the money, and now the music again - but I'm not saying money doesn't talk.
EDIT: I know there are many other reason - I just picked what I thought might be the 3 biggest IE, some just play for themselves, etc.

I liked playing because I thought I'd have a shot at showing something new in songs. However....most people want to sound like bands that wanted to sound like other groups of bands that attempted to sound like other bands.....

I love to just play along to my favorite songs I think you actually listen to the songs differently once you start playing along with them for me it never gets old.
