I don't pretend to understand Jeff's logic there, but that's what he says. He also explains away the fingerstyle thing by saying there was no one person identified with getting fingerstyle going, so it's not imitating, but slap and fretless have highly identifiable people who are known for starting it, so that would be an imitation. I can totally dig the concept of blazing your own trail without imitating anyone else, but I think he goes a little overboard with calling everyone who does slap and fretless "imitators."
I'm not saying Jeff is racist or anything like that, but many friends of mine that are black have told me that there's some kind of prejudice against slap by some folks as it was/is a black dude's thing...
allex, your friend is out of his mind. We liked it when only black people did it. It's when us white guys got hold of it and crapped it all up did we start hating it.
