Why does markbass have so many amp models?

i don't buy that. Aguilar also has endorsements from some *HUGE* players and doesn't feel the need to release a janek, grey or garrison model. If an amp is a solid amp with a wide tonal range, it should be pretty sufficient for general usage...

if mesa doesn't offer a "paul mccartney" model, no amp company should bother slapping names on their stuff

i agree that i like a simple model. genzler offers a 350 and an 800. take your pick. i like that style. too many choices is definitely a bad thing for me.

I heard Markbass has so many models because they like putting knobs on things, and there's only so many knobs one can put on a single model.

They must be doing something right because I see a lot of their gear in use in local venues; as a matter of fact, right off the top of my head I can't think of a brand that I see more of (not counting major acts, where Ampeg definitely rules, IMO).

Their FX loops are all wired in parallel, so you can use the return jack as an aux in. Fixed.

While this is true. I think it would have been good if it was a separate stereo summing input jack that operates at line level. If the FX are -10 db and not +4Db. They could easily overload unless the input is padded plus some audio information could be lost, if it is only mono capable. Cheaper heads have this feature. Most bass amps FX loops are wired n parallel. Guitar amps are the ones usually in series.

The burro's question is not totally answered. The XLR input answer earlier was meant for devices with XLR out and not the aux in that is desired

Besides being incredibly annoying, they are also extremely loud. That also carries over into their amps and cabs...

What is the overarching purpose for the models

I guess the purpose for the models is to give as many customers as possible the set of features of their preference. Some customers prefer to have aux in-hence there are models which have this feature. Some customers prefer to have XLR input. Some prefer (pick your favourite feature).... and so on.

where is the hierarchy?

What hierarchy do you speak of? Why would there be any hierarchy at all?

Do they all share a common preamp and poweramp design but with a couple added features or tweaks?

Some of them share the same preamp. For example: Little Marcus, Little Marcus 250, Little Marcus 800 and Little Marcus 1000 share the same preamp.

Most amps (if not all) share the same proprietary power amp design.

i've had several LM amps. I've been playing a shuttle 9 for a while now (sold the LM amps) but just got a markbass big bang and really love it. I think i'll probably use the shuttle as a backup for a while. There's a nice clarity to it but it still sounds full and fat.
