why does my bass resonate when not being used.

no,not facing the amp.
it's an easy fix to turn the volume off but it has me wondering why it does it when none of my others do,i've moved them around as well same thing.
Just lucky I guess. It must be a very acoustically lively wood combination. Some instruments are more acoustically resonant than others. I have an acoustic guitar hanging on my bedroom wall about two metres from the bed. My wife coughed and the guitar strings resonated noticeably. The one on the wall in my lounge room does the same.
Of course acoustic guitars are meant to resonate but a solid body instrument will too if the wood is lively enough.

For my curiosity, why would you leave the bass plugged in an the amp on? I'd at least either turn the vol on you bass all the way down or mute the amp. You're most likely getting feedback.

It's just picking up vibrations from the environment and the amp is doing what it's supposed to do, which is amplifying those vibrations. That's what creates a feedback loop. It doesn't have to be facing the amp for this to happen, the amp just needs to be close enough to the instrument and/or loud enough that the instrument will be vibrated by what's coming out of the amp. The bass that is doing this is the one that has a good level of resonant capability, which isn't a bad thing.

I've always turned my amps off when I'm not using them and also turned my volume down on the bass itself in order to prevent this. There's no reason to keep your amps on when they aren't in use.
 
That bass likely has hotter pickups than your others, which allows for feedback to happen more easily. Feedback is very common on guitars with increased gain, or microphones.

Get in the habit of turning your amp off and unplugging your bass. Coming home to the whole house rumbling to a loud bass feedback is better than coming home to an overheated amp (or worse).

I have a Gibson Les Paul and Marshall JCM 900 100 watt head going through 2 4x12 cabinets. I turn it up to full volume, set the gain all the way up, leave my Les Paul plugged in on the stand, then go to work. When I get home, I walk through the door to deafening feedback coming from the amp. My guitar seems to make sound when it's not being used. Should I take it in for repair?

WHAT??? I CAN’T HEAR YOU. CAN YOU TURN DOWN YOUR AMP? AND WOULD SOMEONE ANSWER THAT DAMN PHONE?!
 
I must admit that this has been one of the better troll threads, lately.

In my working days past, part of my job was customer support in the field. I made several customer-paid out of state trips to fix control system problems that earned the acronym PICNIC. “Problem in chair, not in computer.” That came into my mind as I lay there this morning.
