why does my bass resonate when not being used.

i have 4 basses and one of them will resonate while in the stand,very annoying!
if i place it in the stand within minutes it starts to resonate and keeps getting louder as time goes on.
i forgot to turn off the amp one day and came home to the house shaking from the bass.lol
my other 3 basses can stay connected with no issues but the fender jazz likes to play itself.
any ideas on how or why it does this?

Maybe I’m just “zany”, but I unplug my bass, wipe down the strings, and put it in its case when I am done with it. I was taught to always put your instrument back in its case when not using it. I also always turn off my amp.

Some basses feed back at lower gain than others. I would expect, if you have several basses, that they'd vary in that resoect.

I am curious: Is the bass that resonates also the loudest of the four when played unplugged?
And is it also the best sounding one, tonally speaking, when amplified?

one of my banjos resonates whenever my wife is speaking loudly.. she gets annoyed by it, but i find it amusing..

Don’t laugh too loud or you might have to get a new one ( banjo not wife).

KILL SWITCH! This is one reason I put a little mini-toggle kill switch on all my basses. Instruments ARE resonant, or they would sound terrible. Once something gets it going, it is amplified and you have acoustic feedback. The reason a kill switch is better than turning down your instrument or amp volume is that then you don't lose your settings.

On my high end basses I put a mercury switch across the output jack so when the bass is vertical (in it's rack) it is muted. Like magic!

It also keep you from making noises between songs, or during rehearsals while not playing, etc.

NOTE - You can't do this with active basses (it will damage the preamp)- only passive.

lol virtually everything in my apt. is on all the time, I'm a consumer, and lazy, I tend to fall asleep with my bass in my lap and got in the habit of leaving it all on. guess what? ya'll convinced me to turn my amps off more often, thx!

Sounds like the bass is too close to the amp. Mine will start to vibrate from the speakers magnet pulling the strings.

Because you fail to turn the volume controls down (off) on your bass before you put it on the stand.
