why does my bass resonate when not being used.

It's just resonance in the body, nothing wrong with the bass. When you're not playing amp should be off and bass back in the case...

i have 4 basses and one of them will resonate while in the stand,very annoying!
if i place it in the stand within minutes it starts to resonate and keeps getting louder as time goes on.
i forgot to turn off the amp one day and came home to the house shaking from the bass.lol
my other 3 basses can stay connected with no issues but the fender jazz likes to play itself.
any ideas on how or why it does this?

Does the resonance stop when you still the strings up by the nut with a hand, while it's still on the stand?

If so, just unplug the thing.

If not... :-(

Probably an electromagnetic resonance caused by unshielded motor, transformer near by?
Move the stand to a different spot, some times just a few feet is enough.
Its possible to track the source of the resonance with an oscilloscope.

I'm assuming that jazz bass never leaves the house or it dosen't happen in other places.
Turn off the main breaker for the house.
If it still resonates after that you can start selling tickets

Nothing a little gaffer tape can't fix - just wrap a 9" piece (not 8" or 10") around the neck amd over the strings.

If it still resonates you'll hafta take more drastic action and wrap a 32" piece (you can be a little less exact here as 31" or even 33" might work) around the body and then over the strings.

This works really well for when you forget to turn off yer amp, I know, because I just made it up.

I have a Gibson Les Paul and Marshall JCM 900 100 watt head going through 2 4x12 cabinets. I turn it up to full volume, set the gain all the way up, leave my Les Paul plugged in on the stand, then go to work. When I get home, I walk through the door to deafening feedback coming from the amp. My guitar seems to make sound when it's not being used. Should I take it in for repair?

There is no repairing it. It's possessed. So to save your soul you must send it to me for an exorcism that could possibly take years, even decades. The world can't afford the trauma those demons will cause if unleashed.

Anyone else thinking it's best to just unplug the bass when not in use...Seems most logical to me..

and mute amp, and switch off... because that's what I do. It's a habit (for a change, a good one!).

But I guess the OP was just curious as to why that happened with this one bass.

Who leaves their amp on 24/7?? In addition... who leaves their bass plugged in with the volume up. Theres gotta be that one guy out of the bunch that makes everyone uncomfortable. I left my amp on over night and I was disappointed with myself...

K. Soooooooo..... if you are LEAVING YOUR HOUSE with your bass plugged in, the volume up, and your amp on with the volume up, the problem has nothing to do with your gear.
