Why does this Alembic sound so bad?

They should have done us all a favor and knocked over the drums and amps at the beginning of the clip. Would have saved us all from having to listen to that, ahem, "music."

That gives me an idea. I have a Spoiler, and it sounds great - nothing at all like the one in the clip that spawned this thread. Is it possible the poor bass, not wanting to be associated with that ...music... deliberately sounded that way so it wouldn't be recognized?

The sound from that clip is awefull indeed...
Not representive for the Spoiler sound at all... :crying:
I've heard my Spoilers next to an old Series I and it's very clear they share the same roots. The Series have much more sound shaping possibilties, but the Alembic sound is right there in the "lesser" Spoilers.
Here's a clip with my Elan/Mesa combi (Elan electronics = almost identical to the Spoiler electronics). Shot with a crappy camera, but you can hear the mighty sound I blasted out on that stage: Youtube link

well i was never a big sepultura fan (truth be told i hate that style of metal)
but
in thier deffence maybe the bass player wants his bass to sound like that?
just because a tone and technique are not the tone and technique you'd use yourself it doesnt mean its bad

ok so you dont like the sound he uses that doesnt mean you can critise it and call it bad at the end of the day sepultura have shifted more albums and played at bigger venues than most if not all people here on talkbass so if the bass sounds so horrid do you think they'd hire him as a bass player? and do you think they'd be playing donnington?

+Lots 'o points...

My Epic 5 blows away most basses I've played, tonally. Different from everything else, but not in a bad way at all.

+1 on the mid-scoop + bad audio.

You can make any bass sound bad if you try. :scowl: Maybe that's the sound he was going for.

Exactly. Maybe that's the sound he was going for. Everyone has different preferences. I've never been all that keen on Marcus Miller's sound but obviously he likes it, as do many others. I'd never dream of showing a clip of Marcus and saying "why does this Jazz sound so bad?". :rollno:

call me ignorant but that sepultura clip was horrid.

i think that the only reason why they get big venues and sell albums is because of marketing. you can market anything to make it sell. the whole crowd at donnington is completely trashed anyway, i doubt they are actually there for the music.

this is just my opinion

Beautiful Alembic Spoiler, but the sound He's getting out of it is, to my ears, pretty atrocious. Alembics normally sound so full and rich, please tell me this isn't a standard sound of a 'lower'model Alembic?!:rollno:

Or am I just being overly critical?

The music's terrible. The bass sounds terrible. He's being consistent :D

I kid to some degree.

Alembics can cover a wide range of sounds, and he's chosen the one he likes, I suppose. There's a vid somewhere on Youtube of Jimmy Johnson playing a solo with one of his fivers. That bass JJ's playing surely has Series electronics, but I'm sure the Spoiler can cop more tones than "horrid metal".

Holy crap it never ceases to amaze me that every single freakin' time there is a thread about metal there are a bunch of guys who like other styles of music and then proceed to post very intelligent comments like "They should have knocked there amps over at the beginning of the clip" or just "metal sucks listen to fusion"( and no I'm not dissing fusion I like some of it). You don't like metal fine, just shut your pie holes, forget about it and go listen to some dude finger tap his 25 string "bass".

I don't like the tone he has there either but to say that Sepultura suck based on one video that's been compressed all to hell to go on youtube is ridiculous. Nothing on youtube has good sound. Even the stuff that sounds "good" on youtube only sounds good when compared to other really crappy sounding videos on youtube. End rant. :)

IMO ----

It was all I could do to listen to the entire clip. That "music" does NOTHING for me. I have never understood trashing gear at the end of your gig. I hated all of it.

Oh yeah, the bass sucked, too.
