Why Don't MIA Fenders Come With Bone Nuts?

Why would you include an animal part on a bass that isn't necessary, is not going to increase sales at all, but might turn away some people who object?

I see nothing wrong with using the bone of a dead cow.

I have never known, nore cared, what material my nut was made of....on dozens of basses over the years. I couldn't tell you what any of them are now.

I have never known, nore cared, what material my nut was made of....on dozens of basses over the years. I couldn't tell you what any of them are now.

The only one I can hear a real difference with are brass nuts vs. everything else. It does matter, really affects open notes. Supposed to "even out" the tone as compared to fretted notes. Though my favorite brass nut bass is my old Carvin LB40 fretless (where it increases the tonal difference between open and fingered).

I was gonna say! I've found brass nuts make the difference even more pronounced. Surprisingly, I've found that pickups do more to make open notes more homogenous than anything. Always hated open notes on any bass I've played...I switch to Geezers on my Fenders, and all of a sudden, the notes are more homogenous. Consequently, I use open notes a LOT more now than I ever have.

Neither do I. My point was a business consideration that some potential customers probably do.

I'm sure the synthetic stuff is easily mass-molded (reproduceable), less expensive, more consistent, and sonically 99% identical.

It's money. Sure, a bone nut might cost 5 dollars more than other materials, but if you multiply that by 5,000 units......

...The synthetic nuts can be molded into almost-ready-to-install shape. That's a pretty big advantage if you're doing mass production.

For all these reasons. Injection molding can produce hundreds of nuts a day with very little variance in tolerances, density of synthetics is always going to be more uniform than organic, and the time and skill required to hand make bone nuts would be prohibitive to assembly line manufacturing.

Now, if the question was why don't they come with TUSQ (which I prefer over any other material for many reasons), that's another story.

There was a lot more to that story than just he could hear the presence of a speck of dust in a piezo pickup. He was trying out a bass with separate piezos for each string, and he heard that the output was slightly reduced on one of the strings. They thought he was crazy till they took it back to the shop and found a speck of dirt under the pickup for that string that caused it not to have full contact.

The american st will be gradually phased out over 2017. Expect some blowout prices eventually.

Also , the decal now sports a "corona, ca" instead if made in usa. Not a fan of that but whatever.

Again I would echo that it's HOW a nut is cut rather than WHAT it's cut from.

I know it's not a super clear photo, but even if the pictured fretless nut IS bone, I would say the nut slots are way too wide for each string and that the nut has been left too high -there is too much material above the strings.

I like brass. The open notes, when used, sound more like a fretted note and it never wears out.
