why don't music stores put flats on their basses?

It's not the "zing" ... it is the overtones, treble, mids, and bass ... that is why I like rounds. I think rounds have a fuller bottom.

If I was rocking a fretless in a jazz trio or something, I would definitely use flats, for everything else they are just to dull and lifeless. No tone, no sustain and no finger noise. yuk. imagine how hard it would be to sell that bass in a shop to someone who wants a standard bass sound. its likely that a bassist who uses flats has enough experience that he knows what it will sound like with flats on.

Same thing in Australia. Never flats on anything, drives me nuts.

Especially when it's a bass aimed at that older tone. I don't know many that would buy a 51' or 63' Precision for an aggressive tone with rounds. They will mostly want flats and that muted sounds.

I don't mind. I put La Bellas on every bass I buy and it's not like we don't a P Bass with Flats sounds like.

Cost. It's that simple. Some people are saying because rounds are the standard and are what is expected to feel "normal", but they didn't become the standard accidentally. They're cheaper as a starter string, and most more experienced players will immediately put on the new strings they prefer anyway.
