They could be very musical in context - I just didn't have a bass next to me to compose a whole piece.
Just tried your hammer-on move BTW. Sounds better if I play it an octave higher.

Fair point, a lot of chordal stuff sounds better higher.
I'm going to have to come up with a fuller example!
How about reaching a 5th stop from 1 to 3 between index and ring, and leaving the pinky free for the octave or 4th above it?
Or something like this, with a barre on the first fret:
1--h3
1--h4
Short examples so not very musical, but wouldn't those be tough to play on a 34"?
where do you get strings for it? ive almost bought on of those many times for noodling but I cant find strings for it. . .
Unless you want this 60s garage tone with no lows and all mids, short scales suck for the most part.
To anyone who plays a Gibson SG bass, I've found that it sounds best with the stock strings. I believe they're D'Addario. Has anyone else found the same thing?

I mess around with my daughters short scale often. It's fun, I have an easier time with chords with it. But, the tighter string spacing throughs me off. I don't have any trouble with the higher notes. Just the string spacing issue. I still prefer my bass, but it's fun messing around with the lil one.
