Why I can't join a band

Man, why do pastoral staff get paid and not the sound guys (or your mom)?

I don't need an answer on this, as it is a flammable question. To the OP, I wish you well in your search for a job and your quest to play for the band. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders so good on you. Take care of business with mom and lil' bro.

First of all, I've been to Beaverton, and really enjoyed it up there. Beautiful country.
I appreciate your dedication to your beliefs, but didn't Jesus break the rules and work on the Sabbath when necessary? Don't look at work as a possible interference for church...look at it as an opportunity to show others through your behavior(not preaching) what your beliefs are and as an opportunity to grow as a person when you met real world problems. It's easy to be a believer in church, a little harder when your boss is chewing you out. Personally, I hate people who preach, go to church, and then tell racist-sexist jokes, get drunk regularly, cheat on their wife, etc..I think it would be refreshing to be around someone who didn't preach, but simply lived a good life...while respecting others rights to believe differently.

Oh no no, church is the priority. Church comes before work.

I'm getting unemployment, which has been paying the bills so far (barely). So it's not like I'm not getting any money at all.

God takes good care of me and my family and I'm believing he'll get me a good job that won't interfere with church.

It's good to see that you have some serious conviction in your beliefs and I don't want to jump on you here but with that attitude it is likely that you'll have little work and very good praying skills. You obviously enjoy being at church and don't want to be in bars, so it sounds like a church band may be the only way for you right now. I understand the validity of volunteering but why don't you ask to be paid by the church for all the extra work you do for them?

Im 35 and have done almost everything you cannot do to maintain a job, home, car etc. I was on dope and booze heavily and basically hustled pool for about 5 years to maintain my lifestlye(if you want to call it that). Five years ago I had a son, sobered up but after his mother bailed on me, I got deeply depressed and dove head first back into the bottle. After about 2 years of this I sobered up again when she moved back into town and I started having my son every other week instead of every other weekend.

In the last year plus, Ive lost several jobs due to no tolerance attendance policys and being a temp due to dangerously high blood pressure, highest I saw it was 217/150. The doctor at the ER said he was waiting for me to have a stroke. During this time I had no insurance, and made just enough money not to quailfiy for medicade. Things was a mess, but I kept getting up every day and doing what I could. This past July my new fiance gave birth to my 2nd son. Luckly for me after he was born I finally got insurance and went to see the doctor. I was instructed to do nothing to over exhert myself including sex, while they narrowed it down. Doctor was afraid I had COPD, luckly I did not but it took some time to get it under controll, and I just now have been released to start working again but she doesnt want me finding a job that requires alot of heavy lifting. My fiance has a job that basically allows us to pay all the bills though things get tight, but that helps alot because it allows me to not have to run out and find the highest paid job available. Honestly Im scared of getting a good job, cos unless you been in my shoes, with the tingling, light headed/dizzness, cold sweats and heart about to beat out of your chest you dont know. Im tryin to find a job in a fast food joint, try to help out and who knows maybe I can work my way up to a manager position one day.

Why do I mention all this, because its not nearly as bad as your making it out to be. Im in a band, we play 3 days a week. Im on antidepressants but honestly the way I feel so alive after practice it carries over for days I dont even know if I need them. Playing with a group is great. Have we had issues or drama, you bet your bottom dollar. We have all been friends for over 10 years, the guy I was closest to has been my friend for over 20 years, and we had to let him go. We joke around with our guitar/vocalist alot and call him Axl (Rose). Just this past Sunday he got upset and slammed his guitar down, chipped the head stock and its a neck through body. All because we ran into a episode of miscommunication. But we are like a extensnion of our familys. Not to mention while we all love music in general playing with new guys is great not only does it help you improve but it also can open you up to new music you might not of ever discovered other wise. I.e. Mettallica didnt have a clue who the Misfits was untill Cliff Burton pushed it down their throats.

As far as needing every weekend off? Not going to happen unless you find a factory job and then understand there is a high chance of the occansional weekends you will have to work. I think my biggest issue now with fast food is Im asking for some weekend time off till after the school year. My sons mom moved to another town and untill he's out of school I get him every weekend. I try to explain that I dont need every weekend or every other weekend just a few days each month so I can take him and do something. My track record of course doesnt help and I need my teeth fixed something fierce. But, still I know and understand its about who to hire, from their point of view a guy who's always free and good or non track record or me? I just got shot down for the 3rd time at the local McDonalds and just like I told her for the 3rd time. I'm going to continue putting these in untill you guys just get tired of seeing me and give me a job.

There is always someone in a worse position than yours, rember that.

If you want something bad enough, you'll get it. If you didn't get it, you didn't want it bad enough.
When I was 14 I was in my first gigging band. I did a paper route after school to buy my first amp (I built my own first guitar from scratch) and my dad used to take me to rehearsal. My band mates took me to gigs, and we played in bars. I was underage so if the cops came in I got shielded by my band mates. I've never been to church in my life (other than a couple of weddings), they freak me out, so I cant imagine what it must be like to have that restriction on your life.
You'll find a way.

None of my first three jobs ever required me to miss church. Not a single service. If I could find 3 jobs that didn't cause me to miss church, I don't see why I won't be able to find another eventually.

I'm not in a dire situation, and I'm not saying that I am. If I wasn't receiving unemployment, and especially if my mom wasn't so generous in letting me continue to live with her, things might be different. At the moment, I can afford to be a little picky. As time goes on, if this continues, I might not be able to be so picky and may have to work weekends for a little while (and I can still work Saturdays until 5pm or Sundays after 5pm, so I don't need the entire weekend off).

To answer bluewine's question: no, I don't think it would contradict anything.

I doubt there's a church in the world that isn't looking for more sound guys. It sounds like you are filling a much-needed role and gladly doing it in His service.

It also sounds like you might be in my situation - wanting to lead worship more, but in more demand as a sound guy than a bassist. In my experience, churches are typically reactive, not proactive, when filling needs. Perhaps you should give them a little warning, like a few months, that you want to take a little break from doing sound. They (with your help) will find someone else. You can take a break for many six months, and maybe practice a little more. Then you wont be needed behind the board every week, and i'll bet you will be suddenly needed on bass.
