Point of order here - I'm not sure how much this particular theme contributes to the discussion but for the sake of accuracy:

I was born in Wallsend (where Sting was from, not North Shields as mentioned above). If he says he was 17/18 when he saw a black person for the first time, I believe him. Tyneside is wonderfully culturally diverse now, but in the 50s & 60s? Not at all.

I will say once again, I was not trying to make fun of the UK in any way. I just noted the demographic differences because what Sting wrote stuck with me.

Absolutely - those demographic differences were very real. I know you weren't making fun

I watched the entire interview, with great interest. My take aways from his career and the interview, IMO of course:
- he is an extremely talented songwriter
- I can't stand his singing
- he's an average bass player
- one of the most insufferably pretentious people I have ever listened to.

OTOH I am a huge fan of Dominic Miller. Dig this:

I watch this over and over. Who ever edited this video did a wonderful job capturing the visual communication between these three of my favorite musicians.

My impression of Sting and Dominic Miller in the Beato interview was they were both very tired.
