Why is Jaco larger than life?

Jaco's fame came from a combination of desire, skill, self-promotion that he backed up, much like Ali and for better or worse, his antics, also much like Ali. Here's a guy who had the balls to say "I'm the world's greatest bassplayer"... that gets attention.

This isn't an anti-Jaco post, it's a pro "the other important bassists before him" post. Knowing what I do of Jaco, he'd be the first to give props.

As for me, I don't much care for most of Jaco's work (musically speaking) It’s his tecnique and ability that I’m enamored by. I think that attitude is just as important as ones ability. Maybe it's just me. They say "It aint' braggin if you can back it up", and that may be true. But it still puts people off. Jaco's simpler stuff gets to me though. I could listen to his version of America all day.

Only if you ignore the fact that classical music "was" popular music way back when.

I wonder who bitched about the state of music back then and what they had to say?

The idea that classical music is chock full of innovation is a hoot, too. For every Bach you had the equivalent of Britney Spears type music, one hundred fold;)

One could even argue that Sting is a more complete composer. Have you ever checked out Beethy's lyrics to the 5th?:

What about Steve Coleman's work or Ornette Colman.....in fifty-hundred years they will still be studying these cats! And to keep this within the thread...I think the song Jaco wrote 'Crisis' will in the long run, a song before it's time.........alot of be people are bugged by that song.......but it continues to blow me away;)

We could just all agree to stay on topic. There's plenty of space here to start new threads when warranted.

So Terry, distractions aside, have the responses been adequate to convince you that Jaco deserves special reverence? Or is it your feeling that Victor has done as much for bass playing, and deserves equal consideration?

Well, from what I've heard of Vic on a show of hands, he seems like he has his compositional skills intact. Not as good as Jaco's, but don't compare his comp. skills to Vics, thats just silly.
Vic has done quite a bit for bass playing. People who are "blind" to the potential of the bass guitar, are usally quickly cured when they here a song like "classical thump" or "more love", or "A Show Of Hands". People seem to think that bass players are barely competent musicians. Today I showed my class 30 seconds of Classical Thump. They were impressed from what I saw. I'm sure there view of the bass is different now.
Jaco could do the same thing. But it would be harder. Jaco's music is very deep. It has to sink in to you before you understand how great he was. When I first bought a Jaco album I thought it was just complicated elevator jazz. Now I love it. He truly was a great musician, but not an effective mind-changer.
So I think Vic does somthing DIFFERENT for bass playing than Jaco, but not neccesarily anything less or more.
