"Jaco Sucks".........boy you must be one hell of a player.....you really should not be a "moderater"!!!

no, i'm not calling myself a good player, don't force words down my throat. So I think jaco is/was a bad player...you probably think the same about the players I listen to...and that, get this, doesn't bother me at all.

And for you to even dare tell me i shouldnt be a moderator anymore (which i retired from 2 years ago, mind you) is quite audacious and very uncalled for. Just because I don't have tastes exactly like yours does not mean I was a bad moderator. Not saying I was/am perfect, but for calling down my earlier authority for reasons on taste alone is flat out ludicrous. If you have a problem that not everyone in the world thinks exactly like you when it comes to jaco, you need a nice warm cup of reality.

I think if you said I don't care for Jaco, or something along those lines I wouldn't even have responded.....but you said "Jaco Sucks" that to me is very shortsighted! And a moderator should show moderation more than most people;) I saw your influences and don't think any of them suck BTW:D

Very well said. I'm pretty certain that the mods frown upon using the phrase "so-and-so sucks."

And, while his influences don't suck, none of them changed the way the instrument is thought of, either....

I guess i just dont "get it"

Obviously !!

I mean anybody who is into Jaco for just his virtuosity hasn't "got it" either.

Seriously - it does take a fair amount of musical experience/knowledge to "get" what is going on in any of the records Jaco played on - he is referring to and building on a long tradition of Jazz playing from his first recorded moment.

I have discovered friom several conversations around here, that a large number of bassists don't even understand or "get" what Jaco is doing on "Donna Lee" or why!!

I like both Vic and Jaco, but agree with one of the earlier comments. I can't compare Jaco and Vic - they're both monster players. But I do think Jaco really changed the state of bass much the same way the Jimi changed guitar.

One difference between Jaco and Vic: Jaco's note selection made much of his stuff instantly recognizable.

One example is on Joni Mitchell's "Talk to Me" on the "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" album. The intro is just a vamp Bb to A with just Joni on guitar and 3 (yes three) tracks of Jaco - 2 backup parts and one solo part. Just listen to the intro. He opens with a 9th (C over the Bb chord) with a nice singing vibrato. You know it's him instantly. Most bass players could play the intro part - but listen to his phrasing and note selection on it. A signature piece IMHO.

Jaco's note selection is always chordal and melodic. He also does some interesting things, such as not playing root notes on emphasized beats, but playing chord tones instead.

For those Jaco fans who have not listened to his work with Joni, you're missing some of his most musical stuff. If you're interested, check out the "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" and "Heijera" albums. Ton's of fabulous and musical bass playing. Jaco at his best, IMHO.

Ok now i have to intervene on this thread yet again.

For one the rules state you are not to question a moderator in public and IMO you entered a very gray area by saying that about a mod. So please dont do something like this again.

Him thinking someone sucks and giving his reasons why he feels the player sucks has no realivency on being a moderator or not, that is simply his own personal opinion of the musician in question. JR is/was a very good mod IMO and future disrepect to him or any other user will get you banned.

On that note, consider this thread closed, any future Jaco related questions or comments, will be closed on sight from here on out unless they are added to the FAQ one in the top of the forum. Enoughs, Enough now!
