I know what you mean tho'. There's two big forums for Les Paul owners/ players that are snake pits.

The art of playing the bass is the art of musical reconciliation. It's not surprising bassists get on well. I'll agree with an earlier post that there are some nasty people playing bass, as I would not be surprised there are some really nice axe murderers, but by in large, my experience is there is a true kin ship only out done by flute players....

I'm a member of several other "enthusiast" forums and none are anywhere near as polite as TB. I've quit several just because some members went out of their way to be rude. Purposeful trolling for no reason other than to incite animosity. Any possible benefit of discourse with like minded persons was outweighed by the unpleasantness of constant trolling and rudeness.

A few years ago, a TB member made a rude comment to me, but instead of ignoring it or reporting it to the mods, I replied back with a rude comment of my own. At first I was surprised and a bit put off when I got an infraction for "disrespecting others" but now I understand the wisdom of tight moderation. Some people will prefer less moderator interference but I think it's to the benefit of this site that everybody is required to be polite and respectful at all times. TB is my favorite place to hang out online and I also believe that it attracts and keeps not only dedicated bass players, but also individuals who are very thoughtful about so many different interests and issues.

TB is the best I've been on, but there are others, I've lurked at f150forum.com and hearth.com (wood burning stoves and fireplaces) and found similar knowledge and respect. I love baseball but lasted only a week at one site due to incessant flaming.

I think the thing about stricter moderation is that it not only cuts back the weeds but also helps make more room for positive growth to flourish. The mods can't make the positivity happen, that's to the credit of a lot of great TBers who share their experiences and insights generously here. But for comparison, a few years back I used to hang around Yahoo Answers a lot, to share what I knew about music and history. There wasn't any major moderation going on, but there were a number of dedicated people who liked to go there and share their answers to people's questions. I left it for a while and went back after a couple of years, and what I found was that over time the trolls had just swarmed over it so much that you could scroll and scroll through it and hardly find a single conversation worth contributing to. It just became a waste of time and I never went back. So for a healthy community you need both - people willing to contribute as positive members of the community, and some enforcers to allow the positive stuff room to breathe so it doesn't get choked out.

The only other commentariat I commonly take part in is CurbsideClassic.com. A great global community reveling in all things (mostly older) automotive. It too is run by a Paul (with help from a few others) and they have a rather strict anti-trolling/name calling/political bickering policy that has done wonders in keeping the forum very friendly and engaging. The similar rules TB uses do wonders here. Also banning @slobake was a great step in keeping the peace

We built a whole city off of being passive aggressive here in Seattle It IS an art form. Luckily (or not), a lot of things go over my head

Bad seeds have a tendency to get weeded out.

Most of the people here are adults with better things to do than be jerks to others on the internet.

Good rules set up by Paul from the get-go and proper enforcement of those rules.

17 years in here, infraction/ban free. I have had a few threads closed involuntarily, but a polite PM to the mod who did so got me a kind explanation as to why.
I've had arguments and disagreements with members, some are long gone and some are still here. It's kind of cool to look back how I've matured in those 17 years.
I can't think of any other forum I post at that's lame or out of control. I suppose I just pick the cool forums to hang out at, although it's 99.9% TBOT for me.
