Why is the Mellotron still popular?

I just watched a concert film of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, filmed 2017 in Copenhagen, and the keyboardist had a prominently visible Mellotron. I think it was probably a newer model and not sure if it was a full-on tape Mellotron or a sampler, as it did not seem to have the lower enclosed body.

That was most likely an M4000D... I really want one....
