In my messages, there is an American flag on my avatar in the last message I posted. Can I turn that feature off? I've never seen it before and would like to remove it.

Triggering? That's an odd way of describing the reaction lol.
I don't think that it's hard to understand that people have preferences for a tool that we pay to use, and for a site that prides itself on being apolitical, this is seen by many as being political. Regardless, even if it isn't, users have the right to ask, especially since this shows up over their avatar and the purpose isn't clear and hasn't been communicated.

That's not what I said. I said, paraphrased, "If you don't like YOUR flag...move." Whether or not folks like my flag matters not to me. If one is unhappy with where one lives and is ashamed to hail from there, why stay there?
If we are going to have some kind of adult debate about the philosophies behind all of this, at least make an effort to try and comprehend what is written before making insults ("blinders," "bad faith," "too thick," etc.).

See? When Europeans mock Americans, this thread shows why they do so. If people have to go so far as to either wave their flag proudly or not want to be seen in close proximity to such a flag, that shows how toxic American culture is. I'm popcorn-munching all the way. It's because of discussions like this that people leave this place. I find it ridiculous and selfish to see a national flag as a political symbol.

A feature that meant to help sellers to see someones location incase they are trying to scam has blown up a stupid crazy discussion. I have pretty much quit all social media for this reason with the algorithms and such. Mods please close this thread before it blows up more.

I honestly don't think anyone should be mocking anyone at the moment, or actually… ever.
American, European, Asian or African - or not. Ask your European neighbors in Germany how they feel about the representation of their flag and concepts of appropriate levels of nationalism.
Your post is a step in the direction of polarization not unity. We are all bass players, full stop.

Political messages aside, I would be nice to know the purpose of it before it was rolled out; if this is supposed to show the country of origin of a poster, as a few folks have already said that is very easily spoofed, whether it be IP address or self identify (especially self identify). I am absolutely sure this had good intentions, but it will backfire; if it's meant to provide a level of comfort about country of origin, unless there are significant safeguards (which will also be privacy issues/intrusive) scammers will find a way to take advantage of it and it will do more harm than good.
The intention of the site was to facilitate information in the classifieds, the selfish acts of current politics or the fear of nationalism have nothing to do with it.

Why would one want to live someplace they hate? And...why is it OK to constantly hurl insults (troll, ignorance, ugly) at someone who makes statements you don't agree with, or simply misinterpret?
I like the rationale behind this decision, but clearly the execution is (ahem) raising red flags. Instead of superimposing the avatar with a flag, is it possible to superimpose it with the two-letter ANSI 3166 country code?

Because I do love my country. I want to be proud it. I want to continue to participate in the political process and currently I am saddened by the perpetual child's play occurring. Again, you have made blatant political statements and now seem butthurt that people are challenging your ridiculous comments.
