Why isn't graphite more popular?

Some interesting "opinions." My empirical evidence is that in 9 years of playing out with my Zon fretless with graphite neck and Lightwave (1st generation) system, I always get at least one, "wow, that bass sounds amazing" comment. While I would like to attribute it to my playing, the reality is that for whatever reason the combination of graphite neck (which is rock stable), phenolic fretboard, ash body and Lightwave system gives amazing tone. Both live and recorded direct.

I can't speak for other graphite applications, but this one is magic and I'll never sell it. And a fellow bass friend who saw it first to this day regrets that he didn't snap it up before I did.


The Lightwave system on the Zons was great for getting a traditional "singy" fretless vibe. Where it left me cold was in getting anything approach a magnetic pickup's ability to punch and hit hard and quick. As long as that's not a requirement they're cool IMO IME. That's why I dug my Legacy Standard fretless 5 so much (with Barts and Polyfusion preamp)... it did what the Lightwave did and so much more. A monster bass. It could sing and punch like a synth.

In all seriousness, no bass can do everything. Actually the Zon with Lightwave can sound like a lot of different things depending on how you attack it. I even have slapped it on funk tunes to great effect (even though I suck at slap). The only thing it really lacks is the initial bite/attack and I find that more of a frets vs. fretless thing rather than pickup systems. And I could *never* get a neutral tone out of any fretless with a magnetic pickup - they always seemed to rather monochromatic to me.

Of course maybe I wasn't playing it right :p
 
Ever play a headless bass with no volute? IME it's annoying. Ever been scratched/cut by a non-ball end string end on a headless that uses a clamp to hold the cutoff strings? Ever need a ball end string in a town with stores that don't carry them?

You seem to think that most folks' aversion to headless is illogical. Mine is based on owning and gigging with them. If I could find a Steinberger that sounded like one of my current gigging basses, that had the tonal flexibility, the wide spacing, the ease of using the string I want to use, that didn't feel like I was swinging around a stick, I'd probably own it. Were any of those requirements unreasonable? Seemed pretty ordinary to me.


Headless basses had their shot. There were even pretty affordable models available but after the novelty wore off, what they didn't deliver became obvious to many bassists. Cool idea but the execution suffered. IMO.

Good points, and valid reasons why someone wouldn't choose headless given the realities of production and availability. The problems with them were not in the design, but more with them not catching on and being expanded to include better execution, thus wider mass production, thus cheaper more accessible and a larger range of inclusion in more bass designs. The problems with grub screws holding standard strings would most likely have disappeared, as most would have gone with double ball strings (which is, IMO :), another step-forward in design...its so quick and easy to change double ball strings compared to standard strings), and again, mass manufacturing would make the strings cheaper (I actually use Status Hotwire double-ball stings, and they really aren't that much more expensive, even considering their limited production). Given larger mass production, I would imagine it may even be cheaper to produce double-ball strings, since there wouldn't be a need for the extra silk covering on the "head" end, and the strings would be shorter, saving material (though those savings may be off-set by the actual ball end...who knows, just hypothesizing here).
When it comes down to it, the problems that you're stating about headless design have less to do with the concept, and more to do with execution.
I still really think headless was a step forward in design that just never caught on because of established manufacturing processes, and the fact that it isn't "traditional" looking.

It is undoubtedly well executed in Status basses, but Status is a custom boutique builder, thus the expense is prohibitive for the buyers at large, and therefore we're back to square one.

If you haven't tried a Status though, I'd highly recommend having a go at one. If small and lightweight isn't your thing (though Rob Green does make the ultralight and small Streamline), there are many models and different body styles, materials, and electronic configurations to choose from...and the execution and quality is on par with any custom builder out there.
I actually owned a Steinie at one point, but got rid of it for much the same reasons you gave for not owning one...then I discovered Status. Doubt I'll ever get rid of my Kingbass, though its not the end all and be all of basses for me either. I've got a custom Lecompte on order because I wanted a fretless with a wooden neck, so see I'm really not a CG only nutjob after all :D. I did ask Bud Lecompte if he could do a headless design on it, but alas, the expense was prohibitive to me given the extra design work involved for him. (go figure :hmm:)
 
I still have yet to see any denial of the fact that CG necks in general have advantages over wooden necks in terms of action and stability. CG IS a more stable and controlable substance than wood. If you were to isolate every other variable, that would always be the case.

For the sake of argument...

The problem with your statement (above) is in its All Or Nothing certainty, your reliance on absolutes. "Always"? Really? Ya think so? Are you sure about that?

...or read any of the other stories from all the bassists (and there apparently are quite a few) who had problems with their composite necks misbehaving in precisely the way that composite neck manufacturers claimed their necks wouldn't.

I own two basses with composite necks: an original Steinberger L-2 and a Modulus Graphite Quantum-6 SPX. You could not pry those instruments from my cold dead hands. They are wonderful axes, I love them dearly, I use them a lot, and I will never part with them, ever. But... I also own wood-necked instruments, a couple of which I love equally dearly. And I could not imagine ever being limited to just a composite necked bass, I have to have wood in my arsenal as well. They just do things differently.

And one of the things they do differently is respond to the "action and stability" issues you mention quickly and effortlessly. In 35 years of playing professionally I have only once had an "action and stability" issue with a wooden necked bass that took longer than five minutes to fix...and that one took a whole 24 hours. It took four months to resolve the "action and stability" issue with my composite necked bass.

So your statement "CG IS a more stable and controlable substance than wood" is true in theory. In practice, mmm, not so much.
 
I don't know, I figure painters must have been pretty excited when the paint-brush came along. And how about that bass guitar, and roundwounds, and onboard EQ, and extended-range basses, and amplifiers, and... well, I guess you might see where I'm going with this. :)
But that's not the point. History has proven that humans will create their art with whatever tools they have at their disposal, choosing one over another for who knows what reason, and the resulting expression is no better or worse because of the tool. It's the artist that makes the difference.

Also, there are two aspects to art. The person who is creating the expression, and the others who enjoy it. It's great when both parties are in agreement over their like/dislike of the product, but that doesn't have to be the case. In that light, the relevance of the tool becomes even more irrelavant.

That's cool. Perhaps for you as an artist, you find inspiration in the tool that has a positive effect on what you do. That's nothing unusual, but if you credit the tool for the music you make with it, I think you are selling yourself short. Just be glad you've found your medium for expression.

Better or worse? Maybe not, but more effective and true to the artist's intentions? I would have to say yes. Different tools allow different artists to do different things. Sounds like the old "tone is all in the fingers" argument resurfacing...:help:

*I* would be that "Bass Friend" and yes, I keep waiting for you to get bored with it (as I assume you will with your new Sadowsky) and sell it to me... And then I will be a happy camper!

That's a different argument than the one some are making in this thread, which is that synthetic necks are just "better and there is no arguing that".

As for the artist's intentions, I think this is a sticky subject. Does the artist have the vision for his expression separate from the tool? That's difficult to answer. Again, if the tool motivates the artist to express, then perhaps. And artistic creativity certainly drives technological innovation. But there are more people using old tools to create their art than there are folks looking for "better" tools.

So it all comes back to my original question. There just is no conclusive answer. A casual survey of what musicians are using to create their art is proof of that. It makes the term "better" seem wholly out of place with regard to technological advancements in MI.

When they first came out, I mentioned the same thing to a friend of mine who had one. Initially he took it as a slam against the bass but the longer he had it, the more he understood what I was talking about.

Maybe. I got a great traditional slap tone out of my Legacy. It was my main bass for a few years and I regularly had people come up during breaks and do a double take when they saw the unlined fingerboard up close. It didn't "have to" sound like a fretless and that's basically where the LW was stuck... it couldn't help but sound like one and not a particularly punchy one either.

No matter how I attacked the LW Zon, it didn't approach the big sound and attack of my mag pickuped Legacy Standard. I a/b'd them directly a few times and the difference was more than obvious. IIRC Lightwave later came out with some sort of mag pickup emulation mode... they didn't do that because it already did.

Wow, a thread about 2 people having a problem with one company's 20 year old product that was fixed and replaced. Amazing that everyone who owns a CG necked bass hasn't thrown theirs in the garbage based on this overwhelming evidence that CG is a flawed material and has less structural integrity than wood. (sorry, I'm looking for the sarcasm font in my operating system but can't find it). Hmmm, I wonder how many companies that produce wood necked basses would replace that neck 20 years after the fact if it warped.

Please go back and read ALL of my post instead of just the last one. Can we get pass that yet? Tell ya what, I'll try explaining one more time, and hopefully make it clear what I'm saying:
I'll give you that any manufacturer of a product is going to screw up, even if they consistently produce great products. CG can have problems if not used or constructed properly (gee, so can titanium). Its a COMPOSITE material that requires correct construction technique, just as the moisture content of wood needs to be correct, and paint be mixed in proper proportion, and the carbon and iron content of steel must be in correct balance, etc. etc. CG not the perfect material for bass construction (nothing is, given the disparate qualities and requirements of so many people), and at NO point did I ever say it was. It still doesn't negate its particular advantages, and physical properties of the the material over wood. So let me amend my statement...CG is a stronger, more stable, and consistent material than wood, if constructed properly in the manufacturing process (there make ya happy?). I'm not saying anything about someone's preference for sound qualities from the material.
Also let me add, that I'm referring to physical properties of wood and CG in THIS universe...there may be alternate universes I am not aware of, where physical properties are reversed or different...maybe they use wood for construction of jet airplane parts instead of CG in that universe, who knows? (still can't find that sarcasm font, so I'll just use this; :rollno:)

While at the same time that CG is stronger and more stable than wood (with all the other caveats just stated...I sure hope someone doesn't JUST read that sentence) it is also a material that can be suitably used tonally for bass construction, at least in the opinion of the thousands of people who bought them and the very well known luthiers who produce them (well, in this universe anyway).

I'll state my original point regarding CG again in a different way. Whenever there is a post about CG, there is always a contingent of "bashers" who always give the same old song and dance about it being an unsuitable material for bass construction, because FOR THEM, they don't like it and usually their reasoning is based on erroneous reasons and inexperience. (please note I said usually, NOT always, not everyone, not 100% of the people that have tried them....this isn't an all or nothing statement)
Have I made myself clear enough yet? I hope so, because this horse is well dead enough for me.
 
I'm ok with the tone of graphite, is there is such a thing.
However, I dislike the extreme stiffness of the neck. I like to pull on the neck, bend it a bit and all when I play. Pretty much impossible with graphite.
This said, if I lived in a place with a lot of changes in temperature and high moisture, I'd probably use one.

This is the zealotry I was referring to. Look at your tone then look at the tone of what you're responding to. Why the sarcasm? People have had problems with necks and they weren't all responding to a thread on TB.

We're talking about a neck material, not YOUR neck material. Maybe that's where the feelings are coming in.

In this post you say you didn't say it was the be all end all. Yet you're the same person who's repeatedly said it has advantages and no disadvantages. Sound reasonable?

Cost and manufacturing difficulty are probably the main reasons composites aren't used as much as wood. Wood is cheaper and a lot easier to manipulate - the appearance of a nice wood is a big advantage too sales and acceptance-wise. Tone is probably the least significant factor.

I know for me I can do a full neck glue up in about an hour - if it's wood.

I marry carbon to maple and other species (carbon for support and wood for tone) and a neck glue up done this way can take me four or five days given cure time and complexity. And then there is the carving which consumes at least three cutters per instrument.

Necks such as Modulus', Moses or even Rainsong (where I used to work) can be done quicker, but the fixturing, tooling and materials are hugely expensive.

The problems I mentioned absolutely were with the design. The design is the reasons I didn't care for it.

They're been around over twenty years and these issues haven't been addressed. What's keeping anyone from executing better?

And I still disagree. They came out around the same time that more than four string basses started to appear. Early five strings were merely modified four string basses and frankly many people thought they sucked, myself included. If they had kept doing that I doubt fives would've caught on.

I've tried several Status basses over the years. Nice but not something I was drawn too.

I thought Bud had a headless model... seems like I saw a headless 6. Besides, if they're going to catch on there will still need to be early-ish adopters (buyers) who step up to the plate and take one for the team. Here's your chance to show the strength of your convictions.

The 6 string headless that Bud Lecompte built was completely custom. The string retainer at the end of the neck was a custom made brass piece by another person, not Bud, and thus not something I wanted to pursue given the cost. Do I need to repost THAT again, or did you get it the second time now?...judging by past experience here, someone is going to read only part of the post I wrote and then wonder why I said that Bud has never made a headless. Please keep in mind that I've communicated directly with Bud about this, so it isn't a matter of theory or opinion.

I've already "taken one for the team" by owning several headless basses...and still don't understand the technological advantages of headed over headless. (I'm sure that will get quoted next)

I've never stated CG didn't have disadvantages, go back and look at my posts (criminy, how many times do I have to repost this? maybe I should just start quoting from my old posts). The sarcasm sprang from having to repeat myself. Again, tired of beating the dead horse that CG ALSO does have advantages (which you obviously enjoy Brad, considering you OWN CG constructed basses). The zealotry here seems to be denying that fact. So keep on denying it if you want...don't care to debate it anymore.

Regarding headless basses using standard strings that may cut and can scratch someone (Although if your are one of the ultra-coordinated-gifted and super careful people who have never-ever been so clumsy as to accidentally bang the head of your bass on something, then I don't see how this simple issue would be a problem ;) ): I addressed it in my earlier post, but let me clarify; Status basses (and Steinbergers) are designed to use double ball strings (that's what I use on my Status). Which are another step ahead of standard strings (IMO...debate it if you want). The grub screws are there as an option. Of course, if someone were to use standard strings, they'd simply have to cut the strings correctly and the problem is solved. So yeah, the issue has been resolved...and more than 20 years ago (my Series 2000 was over 20 years old and designed to use double-ball strings), so I don't get your point. Please clarify.
 
Heh! I'll stand with you on headless basses, younggun :)

Some work really well, others not so. The Status necks have a different ramped profile for about the last two inches before the string retainer, so you never "fall off" the end, as it were. I did play another luthier's headless recently, a lovely six-stringer, and the headless installation on that one just didn't work, precisely because the neck was the same shape right to the end.

I can see some people's objections, tradition, tradition, basses are meant to be made of wood, tradition, aesthetics, tradition, etc ;) But once you're used to them, there's nothing like a headless CG bass. The balance and playability is second to none & if you're lucky enough to find the perfect bass for you, you'll never look back.

I was chatting to a UK bass playing friend last night who also has a Status headless bass. He was complaining that the pre sounded very bland, so I explained that on the Status preamp, you have to use a lot of boost (I use the treble and bass maxed & the mids flat on my Statiis), due to the higher frequencies the Status preamp employs. Give it some serious boost & that's where the knockout tone is.

As for the string choice, Rob Green at Status swears by double ball end strings & says that they make the most of the basses' tonal characteristics. All of the Status models can use either variant of string. In my more recent experience, using "cut off" standard strings made my then KingBass 5-string much dryer and grittier sounding. There is a lot of additional brightness to be had with the double ball end Hotwires.
